I have a friend who is working on a transplanted 440 with a 4 speed....it has the stock bell housing but they installed an aluminum 130 tooth flywheel.

He bought an aftermarket mini starter for a 130 tooth from summit but says it is nowhere close to engaging.....is it possible that because the smaller diameter of the new flywheel that maybe an aftermarket bell housing is needed? ....this is the starter... http://www.summitracing.com/parts/cv...engine-type/v8

According to ram clutches website a 130 tooth flywheel is12.25" and a 143 tooth is 13.75" O.D....

I have not seen his application just going by the info he gave me....

Thanks...

There are two flywheel sizes for a 440. The bell housing MUST match the flywheel. They all use the same starter.

The 143 tooth bells were cast iron, the 130 aluminum.
If he goes with a Lakewood scattershield instead of OEM, they come with adapters for 130, 143 and I think the 172 tooth flywheels.

There are also 130 tooth cast iron bellhousings , 68 69 is the only years that had the 143 tooth bellhousings ... in passenger cars ...

We had the same exact problem when my 440 was on the Dyno. The engine company wanted to use their Lakewood scatter.

Just as others have said, the bell must match the flywheel.

All big blocks and hemis in 70/71 used 130 tooth wheels and if they didn't have a 10.5" clutch they would have used a 10.95 scalloped clutch , if the the scalloped was being made back then ???

Does that 130 tooth iron bell have the 4.80" bearing retainer?

not a true 11". I was refering to the comment about 69 11"/143 bellhousing made of alum.
