And what 440 exactly were you thrashing at a mean 3000 rpm for that test?

No reason to "Beat it" any harder as power dropped off after 3000 rpm.

1978 440 , edelbrock 750 carb dual crush bent exhaust 2 1/4", mopar chrome box , rest stock. 100,000 miles.
It pulled to about 4000 and hit a wall.

You probably lost 20hp in that carb vs the stock tq

That's about what I'd expect out of that package. Less than 8-1 compression to start with.Dave

Actually I've got a 74' RamCharger with 79,000 actual miles on it, it's an original 440 D code unit. Steel crank motor too.
I'm still trying to work all the bugs out of the 318 project. Haven't had much time to screw with it lately though.Dave

I remember pulling a head on my 77 400 to have a burnt valve repaired. Couldn't believe how far that piston was down in the hole at TDC. Thought about throwing some 915's on it, but I don't think that would have even helped.

I don't buy it, you've got a poor running 440 even by late 70s standards. Thats 180 horsepower and 325 ft lbs of torque. I'd expect that running on 6 cylinders with 27 degrees of total timing. You should have 400ish ft lbs of torque still IMO.

Run a compression test and report back to us.

Throw some more timing at it?

It had so much torque it was smoking the tires on the rollers! Look how bad the graph turns into a squiggly line!

I can tell you that with a few right bolt ons...cam, intake, fresh heads, 10"/11" converters, etc...

A 78 untouched short bock went 12.30's @ 110 at 4200#

A 76 untouched short block went 11.70's @ 114 at 3400#

This is also through a transfer case. I would think that robs some power also.

I was thinking that as well when I figured 25 percent loss, but how much more can the transfer case really cost?

Can we get more details on the '76?

i think a stock 375hp magnum might do 240hp at the rear. an 8:1 '78 smogger was rated at 195hp@3600rpm. figuring at least a 20% loss with a tight converter thats 156hp at the rear, maybe a little less in the real world.
