Hello, I'm installing an Edelbrock Thunder Series #1806 with elec. choke on my 68 Charger. My Charger has a stock 383 and using the stock intake (2806301). My question is do you have to buy the bracket kit #1483 from Edelbrock to make it work or is there a way around not using the kit. Also is there an adapter required from Edelbrock between the intake and carb at the base? I do have my original Carter AVS carburetor.

Thanks in advance.

edelbrock #1843 (10.97 + the ride) plus the horizontle OE mopar throttle pin/nut from the AVS. Yes the adapter is needed. The adapter bolts to the side linkage flange then then reuse your OE horizontle throttle pin on the adapter then the throttle cable slips on the inside edge of the pin just like OE. Your OE intake is a square bore & I'm assuming that carb is also so you're good there. EDIT You might consider converting the LEAN (emission regs in those days were strict/discombobulated) OE '68 AVS to eddy 2 step rods/shorter pri jets to richen it up for more driveability especially since this is a stock 383. MORE EDIT I just priced it & you'll be into this over 4 bills. Just me I would definitely richen the OE AVS instead. I had an OE AVS on a 68 GTX 440 & it was doggy till I swapped on a 67 AFB. This was back in '75 & they didn't have what they have now & it woke it up to a certain extent

Also, consider a 5/16" insulating carb base gasket. A lot of intake heat can transfer to the carb. This is particularly important since you live in Vegas. You'll need to keep the carb as cool as possible.

This is a good idea , these carbs need a little isolation , and yes you need the throttle lever adaptor bracket.

Nothing beats this then for the 383/400 - As long as your not concerned about the factory heat choke

Thanks to all for your help. I've ordered the throttle bracket kit Edelbrock #1483 on eBay and the heat insulator base gasket Edelbrock #9265 thru Summit. Ah the waiting game begins. But I want to do this the correct way thus asking you pros on here. Another question, currently I am running the stock points distributor and was wondering what vacuum port in the front of the Edelbrock #1806 (see pic) is used for the distributor vacuum. Yellow arrow (left) or red arrow (right) ? Also I will eventually switch over to electronic ignition so will it use the same port as the points distributor?

Thanks again in advance.

Bryan

Yellow Arrow Left Is Ported Vacuum - Above The Throttle Plates - Hook Your Dist Vacuum There - Same For Points And Electronic Ignition Dist

Red Arrow Right Is Full Vacuum - Below The Throttle Plates

My bad, I meant to write 1481. This is what I bought:

And thanks to all for your replies on my questions!!!

Can you use this type of gasket on my stock '68 383 manifold (2806301)? I'm using Edelbrock #9265 which is a 5/16" (0.320) thick open base gasket, similar to the one you have pictured. Manual says to only use on open plenum manifolds. Or should I use one similar to my original gasket when I removed my Carter AVS (see pic)?

Thanks in advance

You'll get better low end throttle response and torque with the original style spacer. How are you jetting this carb? Original specs are.089 primary with .066-.055 rods and .089 secondary jets (.028 pump jet for manual, .035 for automatic) for '68 AVS'.'69s used .095 secondary jets and .035 pump jets in both manual and automatic. Edelbrock 8723 is the wood laminate 4hole spacer i used and it worked much better than the open plenum shown in above and previous posts. Use manifold vacuum for your spark advance, ported was used '70 and up.

I'm running the 383 completely stock with using the Edelbrock #1806 Thunder Series pre settings.

Thanks for your input.

No Problemo-
I had a '68 Charger once. Absolutely loved that car. Definitely the best looking of that generation.

Strike that comment on using manifold vacuum. I've been checking on the emissions devices and came up with that as most Chrysler systems used a temp activated (225 degree) bypass valve which switched spark advance from ported to manifold vacuum in overheating situations. Looking at old Carters all had the vacuum nipple on the passenger side.
