Anyone done this swap that can give some advice? I'm finally getting around to swapping out my 7.25 inch small bolt rear end, currently under my 74 Dart Swinger, for one I pulled out of a donor A body a few years back.

Since both are A body 7.25 rear ends, can I simply swap the axles and all of the brake hardware instead of removing the whole rear end?

I was initially planning to rebuild the new unit and then swap it out wholesale, but I think I'd rather just swap out axles, seals and brakes.

Thoughts?

iirc there is a difference (bearings/housing inner dia) somewhere inside that precludes you from swapping SBP axles into a BBP housing & vice versa. Swap the whole rear end. There are sure grips available (clutch and cone) but they are pretty scarce but they sure function nice in snow on a DD A body and Randy's has improved spider gears which is the weak(est) point on them (you did say you are going thru it) but as you know they cant take a whole lot of hot rodding. EDIT Split the u bolt nuts with a nut cracker (Sears has one that works good) and rethread the shank below the nuts with a "thread chasing" not a regular die then easily take off the nuts. You might have to undo the nuts slightly so you can get at em with the cracker. Trust me on this one.

yes, there is a difference in the retainers, I tried this a few years ago on my 69 valiant. I had a 73 7.25 rear and the axels would not swap into the 69, I just had to swap the entire rear.

Wheel bearing, retainer, and spacing from the bearing to the flange are all different.
