Scott. The driver side exhaust manifold used the heat shield/ gasket. Am I correct that the factory didn't use a gasket on the passenger side exhaust manifold.

Wow that was fast!! Did you do anything to your exhaust manifolds other than cleaning them up and painting them with engine paint?

The following details overlap with some of the items I already posted on other threads but you might find them helpful. Keep in mind that this is a 1971 engine assembled at the Windsor Ontario plant in September of 1970. These details varied with year, time of year, and plant throughout 340 production. This is a very original "survivor engine" only a very short list of items have ever been changed on it.

Here is one of the exhaust manifold bolt head markings, there were a couple different ones used on this engine

Here is another one. This is the "Dog Bone Bolt" same bolt used for 1970-71 Hemi Carburetor hold down bolts only rather than being black phosphate as on my example, the carb bolts were clear zinc plated. This engine didn't have any of the commonly called "correct" "H" head marking bolts.

There are still some questions about distributors being installed before or after paint. The clues this engine provides helped me decide which way to go on my engine. The small amount of paint all the way down to the inner lip of the seal area leads me to believe the distributor was not installed but rather, a plug was inserted into the open hole to keep paint out of the engine. Had the distributor been in place the steel base flange would have likely covered and protected this area.

*Notice how the previous owner added the "dandelion seed" oil additive

Alternator bolts were a mix, this "F" bolt was used as a water pump bolt when the engine was painted and reused when the alternator was added.

Negative battery cable was added after paint, bolt has an "E" head marking and was plated a light gold/zinc. That yellow paint you see is the original machining/assembly markings showing through the original thin orange paint.

Power steering bracket bolt head "A" served double duty as a lower water pump attaching pulley and was painted with the engine before the bracket was added.
