Hey guys, I have the opportunity to get an unused Detroit Locker differential for my 8 3/4" rear end. Mild 440, Automatic, street cruiser with occasional flogging. Any reason I should be leary of the detroit locker?

Thanks!

Works good, you'll have to get used to the locking and unlocking action, though. It's hard to tell. Kind of a personal preference thing.
I drove a pickup with a 4.56 Detroit Locker (the original kind) for a 600 mile trip. While it wasn't a bother on the road, it was kind of a nuisance in city driving. Lots of heavy duty sounding clunks.

But that's just me.
Your mileage may vary.

R.

I am hopeful that the new Eaton Detroit Lockers are better than the originals. Specifically, it is the Eaton Detroit Lockers 187SL14A.

From Summit website "These Eaton Detroit Lockers are designed to maximize traction by delivering 100 percent of the torque and power to both drive wheels. They are engineered to keep both wheels in a constant drive mode and have the ability to automatically allow wheel speed differentiation when required."

"you'll have to get used to the locking and unlocking action, though"

This is the deal breaker if it was my car in your application.

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

Does anyone have a newer Eaton Detroit Locker that can verify this locking and unlocking action as noticeable/annoying?

I put a Detroit Locker in my 63 about 6 years ago and I dont mind it at all. Most of the time I dont even realize its in there. But sometimes you will hear it lock back up and now and then I may feel it lock up. But its no big deal to me when I do feel it as I guess its because I know what it is. Like I said though that most of the time I dont even notice it. It has worked good for me on the street and at the track also. Ron

Mine took a little getting used to. Get a pretty good pop out of it once in a while. My car is a hot rod, so I really don't mind it.
