I have an appointment May 3 to get the demon inspected by the NHRA at muncie drag way. According to the guy I spoke with on the phone they are only going to check the cage. Isn't there anything else they will check?

Seat belts are up to date
Helmet is up to date
Has a driveshaft loop
has overflow bottle
has battery cut off switch

It is a street strip car with all functioning lights

Thanks

I just went to the muncie drag way website.

It says:

NHRA Chasis inspection date is May 3

The guy I spoke with on the phone said it takes around 15 minutes per car and is $150. That they check roll cage welds and tubing thickness

Said he sets up the appointments for the nhra to do the work at the track.

Hope to make the first pass on the car that day, it hasn't been down the track yet. We have put 40-50 miles on the car since completion.
Hope to put the split mono leafs on it tomorrow and take the xhd springs off it.

They are talking cert for $150... do you run less
than 10.0... and do you have a cage

car has a cage and I have no clue as to what it will run.

My guess would be 11.00's

The cage is one of the jegs kits with the swing out bars.

The weight is with me in it (185 lbs) and a full tank of fuel

so without me the car is 3515. changing to the mono leafs should take 40-50 pounds off of it.

The car is all steel with full interior. Heavy dana, roll cage, 4 wheel disc, frame tied, full 3 inch exhaust, normal gas tank, iron heads on the motor. The intake weighs 22 pounds

If it runs 10.0 or slower there is no reason to spend the $150 to certify it. It's legal to run 10.0 if it passes tech.

If your not going to run faster than 10.00 do not certify the car.

Pro's; it allows you to run the car for 3 yesrs with a NHRA licensed driver, aftermarket axles, certified harmonic balancer, trans shield ,heather tethers, and window net.
Cons: It's $150 you don't need to spend if you go 10.0 or slower. You also don't need to spend the $350-$400 to get a NHRA license (every 2 years) either.

Yes. As I understand it, if they check the cage and it fails for any reason, the car will not be legal to run quicker than 11.50. An illegal bar is no bar as far as NHRA is concerned.

Beyond that, if you know it will be OK and want to spend the money to have it tagged, you will have that piece of mind and the car will have the tag should you ever decide to go faster or sell the car.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

If the cage fails:
Do they tag it as failed or mark it in any other way

They don't mark the cage, but they have a record of the owner and the car. You fill out the paperwork before they check the car. And if it fails, everyone standing around spectating will know it.

You get the form back noting that it has failed. After fixing you need to carry that form back to the next cert tech.

I agree with the majority and recommend that you not cert the car unless you are going below 10.0. I had mine certed several years ago and after it expired I won't do it again until needed. I know it will cert and have that confidence that it is good.

Mine was failed because 2 bars were CM instead of MS. Don't know why the cage builder did that. It certed after replacing the 2 bars.

Just to be clear, the car has a full cage with halo and front a-pillar bars? They are not evident in the photo and most mail order kits do not fit that perfect.

A roll bar is required at 11.49 and faster in the 1/4 mile. A roll cage is required at 9.99 and faster.

A car with a roll bar does not get a certification.

The chassis inspection is JUST for the roll cage, and is only a certification that the cage meets SFI specification. It is NOT a tech inspection for safety and class requirements.

A car with a roll cage that has swing-out side bars can be certified to run from 9.99 to 8.50.

Of course to drive the car at 9.99 (6.40 1/8 mile) or faster, the driver must have an NHRA license as well.

The advantage of having a certified roll cage in a car that runs slower than 10.00 would be mostly for re-sale, as the car could than be marketed as having a cage that is NHRA legal to run down to 8.50.

If you have additional questions, feel free to contact me (PM or phone (in profile) is fine) as I am an NHRA tech inspector.

Run the car and see if you need the certification first
