Hey guys, I was hoping for a cam recommendation by guys with real world experience for my 416. The motor is partially screwed together at the moment and I have a Hughes Engines solid flat tappet stick for it HTL5256AS - 110LSA (252/256 @ 0.050 0.572/0.579 lifts 110LSA) but was looking for a solid roller that would be 'streetable' and provide power with reliability:
* 71 340 block up 0.030' * 4inch MP crank * Eagle rods 6.123' * Ross forged pistons (dished -21cc) * Edelbrock RPM heads ported to stage 2 by SDSS (274cfm/214cfm peak) * 55cc chambers, 0.027' Cometic head gasket, 0.039' quench distance * 11.2:1 compression * Edelbrock Super Victor intake * Pro Systems 950HP carby - flows 840cfm * 1 3/4, 4 into 1 pipes, 3 inch collector * 727 Torqueflite with Cheetah reverse pattern shift * 4,5000 converter * 9 inch, locker, 31 spline axles, 4.56 final drive
I'm looking to run a 10 second pass on pump gas in my 3,500lbs Australian Charger (A Body). What do you guys think of the Hughes solid cam I have? What solid roller would you recommend that will be reliable and make good power? Please, I would prefer to hear from people with race and street car experience running similar cams with similar combos. Thanks
Chris

I think improvements will happen by getting rid of that cam. It's tiny for a 416( I used to run that cam in a 416 and it wasn't a 10 sec combo with eddies. Here is the exact combo I built to go 10.74 at 3450 pounds and drove around constantly. A body( all steel, bench seat, 6 point roll bar, 300 pound driver) 4.10 gear( 28 inch tire) 8 inch Ptc convertor, 4900 flash 70.. 340 block 30 over, Mopar 4 inch cast crank, Ross pistons , eagle h beam rods 11.7 compression Edelbrock heads, " stage 2 " ported by Hensley, went 274@ 600 peak. Gasket matched weiand excellerator intake, unported 1025 race demon 4150 style carb Tti 1 5/8 to 1 3/4 step headers with flow master mufflers Comp cams flat tappet cam 107 LSA installed at 104, 598/ 623 lift, 260/ 266 duration @ 50. I think this combo would have easily went 10.50's with a roller, but I was happy with it as it was and drove the heck out of it. I called comp and we ended up going with the above cam, and it obviously made good power, but thereafter, every combo I have run I have ALWAYS called Dwayne Porter and had him spec the cam. He is a comp dealer and in my opinion is the best person I have ever dealt with to make the correct cam choice.

Comp Cam XR286R. I am a member of several race boards and it's only the Mopar board that still recommends flat tappet cams. Yes, rollers cost more but they work and there is never any lobe failure.
There is really only one problem running them on the street like he wants to do... they dont like to idle down low.. its the lack of oil on the rollers... it can be corrected with the edm hole in the lifter to feed the rollers... I went that way on my 416 for the street... mine is a MP roller basically for a roundy round engine... its 260/270 .640/.640 on a 105 lsa installed at 105 because I didnt want to increase the torque any higher with a 5000 stall conv.. this ended up in the 580-590 hp range with ported W-2s and 850 carb... one other thing.. I had to use a high volume oil pump with the lifters.. they have a larger hole in them than I had heard... its like .022

The roller cam in my pump gas small block is only 255/266 @.050. But mine is only a 394 ci. It made 662 hp at 7300.
1.33 60 ft,6.21 at 110.59 in the 1/8, pump gas small block,2950lbs,drag radials,mufflers and driven to track ...

Maybe its your builder. 39 years of building my own engines and racing weekly from early April to November and I finally had an engine slightly round a lobe. It was Matts 10.50 running 360 on its second rebuild (5 years). LOTS of passes and early in its use my Son was inexperienced in the use of alcohol son his oil was often contaminated with water from improper start-ups and shut-downs. I on the other hand had TWO roller lifter and cam failures.
I've never used a flat tappet cam...ever. I truly doubt that the OEM uses them any longer either. What Mike said about oiling is true and he used the right fix. My builder uses a big comp roller on my BAE hemi.
