its been a few years since I have replaced a steering gear on an ol MoPar. I know you shift the front to back to get the steering wheel to center, but My question is is there a trick? Ive moved it basically both directions front to back and got little to no change.

you mean where the hoses come in for power steering right?

when you say no change, what do you mean? I have seen it rip the wheel all the way in one direction or another with small movements.

you do have the front end off the ground right?

yes its off the ground, its on my hoist.

Do you guys leave the bolts kinda loose and adjust while its running?

I know little movements are what I did last time, but I moved it severely this time and got basically nothing.

I don't like messing with them. I took my boss for a ride in my 70 Challenger doing about 40-45 and that top plate shifted while driving. The steering. Wheel ripped out of my hand a did a 45 degree turn on a dime. I was shaking for the rest of the day

Keep your wrists out of the steering wheel

I used to do them with the wheels in the air,SLIGHTLY loosen the bolts, start the car, at idle speed lightly tap it back and forth til the steering wheel stays centered. Been a LONG time, but did a bunch back in the day when I spent a LOT of time on the alignment rack... it could cause a pull

Have you bled it by going all the way to one side and holding it then going the other way and holding it? When you say you want it to center are you talking about even movement one side to the other or some other movement? Normally when you replace a gearbox you don't need to mess with the valve.

The owner of the car has a uncle who rebuilt it for him, has done a lot of them, so the valve has been off. And I did go side to side and bled the air outa it. If I rev the engine a touch it still favors the left side.

is it giving any power assist at all?
could be bad flow/pressure is why you don't see any change.

Yes theres assist, just forces it to the left, its harder to turn to the right. Whickif its not "centered" that makes sence

well i got it figured out, got it set, but it has a terrible leak out of the top of the adjuster jam nut. Mike is gonna get me a new gear, and I also noticed the power steering pump also is leaking pretty badly, so thats going on also.

So thanks guys..
