the wife is gonna put a new powerplant in the challenger wich will be over 500 inches and the stealth heads so my plan was to take a 440 bare block have it dipped then have it coated

Polyester powder coating is cured at 400 degrees for about an hour or so. I would imagine that the heat from the engine would exceed this and cause it to flake off. I honestly can't say what the outside of the block temperature is during operation is.

I built a BB Chevy for a friend last year and it was powder coated Chevy Orange. He drives the back and forth to work a couple of times a week and to the track some. It don't run hot and hasn't dulled or anything. It was very tough also. He bought the block already coated so I don't know what it cost to have it done.

Powder coating blocks and heads, waterpump housings, intakes, etc have been done for years by the hotrodders,.....the resto crowd is slow to catch up,......I had a sixpack intake and smblk timing chain cover, after polishing them out, powder coated in clear years ago, just the heat crossover area darkened, but never lifted,......theres a lot of new masking techniques they use nowadays, I'd recommend just the outside of the block, heads, and whatever else you have done, see if they will mask off the machined, as well as internal areas.....plus I hope your aware they will sandblast the pcs to promote a serile surface, so cover surfaces that aren't meant to be blasted, and clean the piss out of it when it gets home, you don't want any traped sand, if no core plugs are in it, sand loves to build up in the cooling cores!.....be careful

the block will be hot tanked so no sand blasting also only the out side of the block is getting coated

My 440 block, intake, oil pan, timing cover, valve covers, etc were powdercoated. No problems at all if done correctly.

Would hot tanking the block get it clean enough? Or does it need blasted or other cleaning measures?
