My daily driver Tiburon is going through a ton of oil since the new engine was put in. I'm going through 2-3 litres a week!

In that time, I've noticed my exhaust tips are now a very sooty black, spark plugs are sooty and very dark tan to black and my oil was completely black after 2 weeks of driving and about the consistency of water. It also had the smell of varnish.

This to me screams the car is running rich, and by putting that much fuel through, it's washing the cylinders down and diluting the oil with fuel.
(That's my take on it, correct me if I'm wrong!)

But I have no check engine light! Not really sure how to progress at this point other than take it back to the dealer that did the engine swap.

this sounds stupid but did you smell the oil? did it reek of gas? if so then you might be right about washing the cyl. walls.

I did an oil change on it today and the oil doesn't smell of gasoline, but it was very pungent more like varnish and it was really thin and very black.

My old engine could run for 5000 miles before the oil started to turn colour.

I agree that if its running very rich it can wash the cyl walls down. Which means the rings are not sealing good and oil can get into the cylinder since the rings could be washed down and not sealing. I know on older engines I have seen an eng flood and then loose the ring seal as it washes the oil away on the cyl walls. Then it looses comp and wont start and will crank real fast as no comp. I have got many old cars like this started by putting a bunch of oil back in the cylinders to get the rings to seal back up.

I would definetly take it back where they put the eng in. Ron

It's back at the dealer right now. Put my Daytona back on the road for now (funny how a 30 year old car runs better than a 10 year old car) and they'll keep me posted. Shame that this had to happen to a brand new engine. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's not completely fooked.
