Hey all this is my first post so if stuff is wrong just let me know, not a big computer guy. Ive lurked the forums for about two months but didn’t register because my kids are always on the computer. im Vin, I got a good deal on a 70 Charger that needed an engine and transmission. Im trying to get the engine in this weekend.I got a 400 for almost nothing but it had a lot of stuff removed from the top end and all the pulleys and stuff. i bought a cheep edelbrock torker intake at a swap meet with a 850 Holley DP on it that I just rebuilt. I had to buy a dampner, rocker assembly, valve covers, a starter, distributor, a water pump, distributor, timingchain motor mounts, and some pulleys to put it all together and in. I called up this company 440 source I found and got a great deal for all of that stuff I’m out of money now, but man I got a lot that place has good prices. If you don’t know about it you should check it out. 440source.com. I also put in a mopar 509 cam and lifters and old headers I got from a guy at wor, I got the engine together about a week ago and im gonna put it in this weekend and start it, hopefully go fill some streets with smoke. I was told the 400 likes to rev and the guy that gave me the cam said it’s a good cam for revs and he said it will sound real good at idle. what can I do to maybe get a little more out of it before I put it in.

Do you only have a stock converter so far?

Sounds like a fun car to play with - have fun building and welcome aboard.

Others will hopefully have a more optimistic answer but personally I don't think you'll be very happy with your parts combo, 400's didn't have much compression typically less than 8.5-1 C/R, your cam likes 10.5ish C/R...Beyond that welcome to Moparts...

First off, welcome to the mad house

Second, Nice score on the charger and motor.

Third, this thread is useless without pics

Fourth, Here's hoping you can find time to work on the car now that you've signed in. This is the Black hole of the web (where did my life go )

Bill

P.S. Did I mention we like pics

1st WELCOME.
If you have the time, look for a diff cam. With you combo, that cam won't come in until 3500-4000 rpm. Your converter won't let you do that off the line and thusly no smoke. Need to calc. your compression ratio. Sorry but if you are looking to stomp, you'll need to science this out a little more.
As said pics please and good luck.

I agree with the above. Cool score, but too much carb, way too much cam. If it runs under 1000 rpm, it will feel sluggish. It will stay sluggish until about 4Krpm, then it should wake up.

Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.

IMO you would be much happier with a dual plane(performer or rpm)intake, smaller cam(like a comp or lunati 262 or 268),and a 750 vacuum secondary holley would be my choice. What you have will run but not very well down low.Keep in mind the cam you have likes alot of rear gear as well.
Welcome to moparts!!

I've ran 509s in 383s with good results, but as has been said check your compression ratio, I used to mill the heads .030 and use a Felpro gasket, it would slightly raise the compression ratio while still allowing the intake to seal problem free....

Welcome!

You'll soon find this place has alot of opinions, so get yer car runnin, post some pics, and have fun!
