My buddy just installed a ready to run distributer in a 400 with a thermoquad.
It will run with the lean burn un plugged , but its back firing thru the carb.

I thought there was something you had to do to the carb in this situation ? What are we missing here

I converted a 318 years ago and it ran fine without touching the carb

It sounds like his timing is messed up since that's what he changed.

I bet the spark plug wires are crossed up? he should hope.

What is a ready to run distributor? Who makes it?

I had thought that the lean burn carb ain't a stand alone piece? vac hose off/plug wires (as said). Is that the $45.50 eBay dist?

Im going to stop over there tomorrow night with a timing light and go thru all the basics. I think he may have a vac line off....

If i cant find anything, im blaming the "lean burn" carb .
Hes getting a new holley anyway soon

Lean burn carbs run rich by default. From any engineering perspective you want a failure mode to fail "safe", failing lean would not be safe, failing rich would be.

But go ahead and blame the carb, typical. Your buddy fat fingered up his vehicle with some cheapo POS junk Ebay scrap pile distributor, but hey it's obviously the carb. He would have been better off with a different style "ready to run" distributor, called points.

Scrap the junk distributor is my suggestion.

I have had great success using the MP dist kit.(no longer available?) I have also used a single point dist that worked fine.Never had to touch the carb.Sounds like problems are other than the carb.

Let's see, replace the distributor, it runs bad, must be the carb.

Hopefully your paying for the shotgunning, not your buddy.

I suggest you double check the installation, wonder if you remembered to bypass the ballast.
