Car is a 67 RT....has 440/727 combo in it. I have a few small maintenance type issues that would be easier if the motor was out of car. Also, I want to strip/clean the outside of the motor and paint it. I am not tearing down the engine.....doesn't need it. I would also paint and cleanup the engine compartment at this time. Here is the question.....

Do I pull the transmission and the engine stil connected or detach the tranny and just pull the engine by itself? I have a 4 post lift in my garage if that changes the answer.

My vote ..... Just pull the engine :big grin:

Need to do that same thing to my '71 Challenger

With a lift, I'd pull everything from the bottom with the K-member and lower suspension. Less to mask and get overspray on, less to scratch putting the motor back in.

Do you have headers? Then for sure on bottom.

With a lift? That baby would be out the bottom in an hour!

Also, by taking it out the bottom, the hood states lined up, and if it's not already that would be a good time to do it. I put my Hemi in from the bottom last Sunday, and I can tell you a wedge would be a snap.

He siad he had a 4 post lift which in my mind means a drive on, so out the bottom might not be doable. I agree though in and out from the bottom is the only way to go.

Oh
I separate mine and pull them both out of the car.
Engine out the top and the trans out from underneath.
If you pull it all from the bottom you will end up needing an alignment and that ads to the cost. Less work to realign the hood
then doing the front suspension.
Now if you are doing more then just the engine compartment pull it
all out.

Just my 2 cents.
David

It is a drive on Bendpak 9xw 4 post lift. It has approx 45 inches between the runways so I believe I should have enough room. This is my first time removing an engine/tranny attached from the bottom. Any pointers are much appreciated!! What pieces of the suspension will need to drop with the k member? Will I need/should I replace any front suspension parts at this time? It has stock front suspension that needs rubbers(at a minimum) replaced.

This is exactly what I want to see with mine...full access to the engibe to replace core plugs, remove all brackets/hardware to prep for paint, and replace any gaskets at this time.

All you need to unhook is the upper ball joints from the steering knuckle, and the steering coupler, and of course the brake lines and the normal other stuff. Once you do it this way you'll wonder why would you would even think of the other way. One other thing, if you have any hood alignment issues this the time to fix it, with the hood closed, then you can align it properly. Just like the factory did it. Sorry yes the T bars, but the UCA can stay in the car.

This won't be enough room. Ideally all you'd remove before dropping it out the bottom would be the torsion bars, upper control arms, shocks and the front wheels. To get through the 45" opening you'd have to pull off all the suspension parts. I don't own one but I think that would be more hassle on a 4-post lift than if it were on jackstands.

Everything except the torsion bars drops with the k-member.

Now's the time!!

If it were me ... I'd drop it from the bottom in my driveway or whatever then get the car on the lift for storage. That would probably mean making a couple dollies to bolt to the frame at the front bumper mounts.

Oh yeah, forgot about the steering and stuff!!

Anyhow, when it come time to clean that thing, strip off all the accessories, stuff some rags in all the ports and have it dry-ice blasted. It won't get rid of rust but it will get rid of all paint, grease and oil without harming any of the surfaces. Should be ready for paint then.

Out the bottom is the only way to go. And by seperating the upper ball joints, you don't need an alignment, although now would be the time to be changing at least the lower control arm bushings and strut rods bushings while you are in there. Leave the control arms in there untouched. Easy to change the upper ball joints now too if needed.
I do this all the time, and it can be done easily with only a floor jack and 2 jack stands. No hoist needed. Or an engine hoist and nylon straps to lift the body by the front bumper works well too.
