Had the toy out last weekend playing. Made a run in 4low through the mud, turned around to make a second pass. put the truck into reverse from a full stop and as soon as truck went into reverse it jerked and stalled. started right back up, put it into reverse again, same thing, jerk then stalled. Put it into drive, same thing. pulled it to the house.

No noise at anytime during this that was out of ordinary.

Today, put transfer case into neutral and transmission shifts through all gears fine. put transfer case in gear, stalls. pulled drive shafts, and left transfer case in gear, truck does fine. jacked up both axles and they turn free.

Any suggestions?

Check Engine light on? My first thought was IAC, but could be a lot of things.

Off the top of my head:
TPS: maybe it got wet during the mud run?
Check fuel pressure.
Throttle body clean?

It's Swifty! Swifty, you toad sucker!

No check engine light. it is almost like the engine stalls because of load

My brother had an 82 Cordoba that did the same thing, forward gears were fine, but stick it in reverse and it would die, unless you feathered the throttle, popped it into reverse and could get it going, the it would back up, but U still couldn't stop or it would die. Its like u described, it would load the engine immediatey then die. The tranny was pooched, not sure what but we changed it out and it was fine.
Since u were mudding, I would go with a tranny problem

The converter clutch is applying, most likely the converter is bad but there could be other issues in the trans that may have caused it.

Yep, converter is toast. Time to pull tranny and replace converter.

Had a 91 Dakota that did the same thing. It would run fine until you came to a stop and then just shudder and die. No trouble lights. It would start but wouldn't run in gear.

Went on for a few months intermittently, always ran fine when I took it to the dealer. Turned out to be something like a speed sensor. Apparently the computer didn't realize the truck had stopped and needed to change to idling from coasting or some such.

Before you tear it apart, try doing a neutral drop and see if it will run fine like mine did once it starts rolling. Not something to make a habit of with any automatic, but might direct you to a sensor instead of an unneeded transmission R&R that won't fix the problem.

Cheers.
