Working on a 71 Cuda with power steering. The seal on the wormshaft is leaking. Other than that leak the box works fine. The service manual says that the seal can be removed and replaced without removing the box from the car. It says to use tool C-3638 to remove the seal. I do not have that tool and have not found it available anywhere. Anyone have any advice, experience, or suggestions regarding how to remove and replace the seal without removing or disassembling the box. The housing that it fits in is aluminum and I do not want to damage that trying to get the seal out.

Thanks,

John Brough

Here are a couple of things you can try, worked for me on the pitman shaft seal. You can try a small chisel, drive it in at an angle and work it back and forth to walk the seal out. Or after making a hole with the chisel take a long wood or sheet metal screw, and start threading it in the hole you made with the chisel, and pull the seal out. Just be careful not to scratch the shaft or the bore it sits in.

Once you remove everything to get to the seal, just use a wood deck screw. You can drill a samll hole in the seal or just start the screw. Put one on one side and another on the other side and pull on them both at the same time. It comes right out.
