Has anyone ever just used a bulkhead fitting or welded a bung on the side of a pan (basically NO internal pickup) ?

no for a couple of reasons.
the oil will be passing by the fitting, it goes in the side it can suck air and its also not in the center. you don't need a swinging one if you have baffles that close but you do need one in the center back about 1/2" off the floor.

Bob I have been running static pickups for years. Just wondering why this won't work. The pickup in the pan has the fitting screwed into it. Was wondering if I could just eliminate the pickup

Ok a screen it is.....good thing it's still cold out. The wife won't notice that I cut a piece of screen out of the screen door!

I think the OP has a valid question, WHY? It seems back in the 18 hundreds some one thought that the oil pick up needed a screen. That probably was needed back then as oil was not refined very well, I read in a 1927 STAR [ that is a car ] owners maintenance manual. If you loose oil pressure, remove the oil pan and clean the lint from the oil pickup screen. Then there was also a baffle added for some reason on some engines. Was this to limit the oil flow, straighten out flow? every engine I have taken apart had a pickup screen 3-4" in diameter, some baffled some not. To use a pickup or not? I agree with having a screen to protect the oil pump, but a pickup from the 18 hundreds? The question is WHY?
it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

Any of those pickups would be better than just a fitting in the side of the pan. You need to capture as much oil as possible when racing, and properly placed pickups (especially swinging) help do that. When under acceleration or deceleration oil is sloshing around like trying to run with a dishpan full of water, and a lot of oil is up in the motor so the pan level will be lower. Do you really want to just *hope* that little fitting is always covered? In a static situation you'd be fine, but once the car is moving...
I see this as a risk/reward situation. What, other than a little cash, is being saved? Is it worth risking the motor over <$100?

If it ain't broke ... you're not pushing it hard enough.
