Is there even such a thing as cheap single stage paint, something that will last a couple of years?

Almost every paint system has a value line of single stage. I just used some Martin-Senour (same as Sherwin Williams Dimension line) on some parts. Plan on lots of drying time! I used the SS urethane.

What color you looking for? Try Transtar polyurethane paints. They come in a variety of colors. Buff really nice. Don't die back like a really cheap color. Don't fade out. Oh and they are cheap. I've done a few things and cars over the years. Not seen any issues.

I used the low priced single stage on my van.
Limited colors stock, but they can mix 'em for you too.
It's been outside for the past few years, and I've washed it maybe 10-15 times. Held up so far...

Don't do Omni or shopline depending on if it's a planium dealer or not but Omni/shopline will die out in no time. Not worth the coin to use unless you are a used car sales man IMO!

I am having all the big dents taken out on my R/T and just want to get some color back on it till I do a complete resto in 3-4 years, it will ever sit outside other than when I'm driving it.

What about Maaco?

Avoid Maaco or Earl Schieb. Poor prep work and material will lead to problems.

Another option I forgot about: http://www.smartshoppersinc.com/kirker/acrylic-urethanes.html

They actually have some really good colors to choose from.

I painted a 240sx in Omni, daily driver, never garaged and sold it 4 years later, paint was in GREAT shape. My current daily driver ( a dodge stealth) has several panels reprinted in Omni, no issues. It's a good value paint, far from the best, far from the cost of the best, but still a very good paint.

I only need it to last a couple of years till I do a complete restoration, it might be cheaper than buying paint

Omni is ok if your using solid colors but their metallic are very poor covering. You'll wind up having to put more coats on which will take away some of the cost savings.

Used to have very good luck with RM Miracryl and Sherwin Williams Sher-Gloss for value paints - either would serve your purpose well, with the RM being slightly better for metallics.

Have had good luck with Omni and Limco 1-2-3 too, but am a few years out of date on the best budget paint systems.

Maaco might be the best route for an inexpensive coat of paint. I put several cars through them over the years and was pleased with the results. I'd do my own prep and some masking, so all they had to do was mask the windows and non-removeable trim then spray the car.

If you want to do your own painting, Tractor Supply Company carries an inexpensive line of gloss enamel meant for farm implements. It would probably look OK on a street vehicle.

If you take it to Maaco, make sure you wash it really good... otherwise they'll paint right over the dirt. hahaha.

Most stores that mix paint have a discount shelf with paint that was mixed and didnt match, sometimes very inexpensive to buy a decent paint.

I'll preface this with "its just my humble opinion".......

you never said whether you were going to shoot it yourself or pay someone to do the job.....the paint regardless of the quality & price of it is the cheapest part of the job.

If your going to shoot it yourself why "cheap" out on paint & I dont mean only in price.

Its been suggested NOT to use products like Omni - never used it so cant say anything bout quality but I've heard the same about it before.

Are you willing to accept poor quality body work at this point that'll only last 2-3 years and if thats unacceptable at this point & you want quality body work but think you'll be saving $$ with "cheap" paint, why ??

If your cars been sanded sown to metal & the dents are being massaged out it doesnt take anymore time to do quality bodywork at that point, might as well do the good work now then put something decent on top.

Perhaps an upper half resto at this point will get you to where you want to be faster then a cheapy drive by spray job & a re-do in 4 years.......

All that said, some high quality paints for reasonable prices - ProSpray - talt to Chad @ http://www.autorodtechnologies.com/

http://www.southernpolyurethanes.com/ talk to BArry, I think he's even selling single stage paint again in some stock colors.

I've shot a bunch of misc colors of Martin Senour from NAPA, motorcycle, misc car parts, bicycle, etc... matter of fact the sidemarkers bezels on the 71 are in MS.

Anyways, good luck & some food for thought.

I guess you can't read. I am having some of the big dents and damage repaired. I can leave it in primer till I do a complete restoration in a couple of years or shoot some cheap color on it for additional protection.

Where did I ever say I was doing a full resto or doing shoddy bodywork? This car is still wearing it's original paint. According to you I need to do a full blown body and paint and as I stated that is not in my plans at this time.

This thread might help you understand what I'm trying to accomplish.

Here's what I would do. Spend the money for a better quality base coat, then purchase an inexpensive clear coat system. The problem with cheap single stage is the amount of coats necessary for good coverage. You WILL use a lot of material. This turns into a full day of painting as well as a ton of build up (mills). Couple that with a metallic color, and you will have a car that is zebra striped to hell and back. A quality base will cover quick and allow you to step back and see the finished product. BTW, use a "stabilized" base so you won't move the metallic when applying the clear.

Restoring a car to look "only" as good as the factory made it is like getting a boob job for your wife and having the doctor make them two different sizes to seem more natural

One more thing. I would still use a "wet on wet" sealer before shooting the base. On just the exterior, you should be able to cover that car with 2 quarts of quality base coat material. Original paint or not, it makes a huge difference.

you asked about cheap paint, thats all you said. THen you expanded that to " I just want to get some color on it for a few years". What I suggested was far from a full resto, then you comment about leaving it in primer & out in the weather. Primer's not waterproof unless its epoxy, I also pre4faced my comments with "in my humble opinion" thus meaning I'm suggesting things your not asking for or about.

your post is so vague about your process and contradictory in some ways it seems like more info is better & not only for you but perhaps others reading about resto / paint process who want to do the same. Posting isn't an " its all about me" everytime, the info is for everyone sometimes especially when there's so much bad info about painting out there.

I'm sharing information from experience, not from fantasy but apparently all your interested is in "cheap paint" so buy the cheapest "omni", "shopline" or whatever primer you can find, do the bodywork & let it sit outside for a few years so the filler on top of the new body work under the cheap primer can absorb some moisture so you can have the pleasure of doing it all over again in a few years!

enjoy.......

Where did I ever say I was doing a full resto or doing shoddy bodywork? This car is still wearing it's original paint. According to you I need to do a full blown body and paint and as I stated that is not in my plans at this time.

This thread might help you understand what I'm trying to accomplish.

you asked about cheap paint, thats all you said.

I didn't proof ready that one post, it will never sit outside and never be subjected to weather, none of my cars sit outside. Our cars don't rust here so leaving it in primer is an option. I have let bare metal sit in my garage for years without getting even a slight haze.

Paint would just be added protection, that's why I might even go with Maaco if they are cheap enough.

Instead of getting into a pissing match over cheap paint, just give me a call. As you know, I'm the king of cheap I'm on spring break this week, so I'm home working on my super Bee most of the week.

Went into the local Maaco today, their paint jobs range from $399 to $1199, a few cars sitting outside actually looked pretty good

I have been shooting cars with fulthane for several years now, It seems to being holding up very well. I had so many leftover partials, white, red, blue, yellow, etc. I mixed some together & sprayed my toyota. People ask for the color & I just say, 'your guess is as good as mine.'

Hey Dave I had a friend that used to get Macco paint jobs and then sand and rub them himself a month or two later and the cars were always pretty nice.
The real problem I think your going to have is getting the color close to look factory with a cheaper paint now adays.

This is how deep the paint looks. That is my truck - a good 30-40 feet away

Ok here is my Find aPPG PLATINUM distributor they have to send their people to school every year for PAINT training they can give you options in your price range and the best bang for the buck. Thet do not sell hard parts so you will not get someone trying to sell you brake pads with that ,also PPG is not made in vat in a abandond building .People will complain about cost but PPG has options and is the largest paint manufacturer in the world and the technonogy is second to none . PS,no matter what you decide the paint will only look as good as the bodtwork and prep. Thanks Nick

Has anyone used NASON by DuPont?

I have used it a bunch through the years. Even sprayed single stage metallics with it. I like it.

Lots and lots of guys around here use the Nason stuff, especially the clear. It sprays out good and looks good. But it will not live as long as the front line Du Pont.

With the clear, you can really tell the difference if you wait a few days too long to rub out the DuPont Clear. It is much harder to cut and buff than the Nason.

By the way, DuPont has been bought out and the paint is in the process of being renamed by the new owner. Our local paint supplier is struggling now with some of the mixing changes going on.

A red last week was so far off on the first mix that he had to throw it out and start over. And a white yesterday had to be tinted quite a bit to get to a point that I could use it.

I hope it gets better.

Master, again and still
