My shroud is perfect, no crackes, splits or scuffs BUT it is dirty and I cant get it clean, I have scrubbed it several times but it is just in the pours of the fiberglass/plastic. My brother mentioned trying a Mr. Clean magic eraser which I will try tomorrow but I was just wondering if anyone else had used anything successfully. I tried a search but it didn't turn up anything.

Thanks in advance, Kevin

I've always been able to clean the dirtiest ones.

What type of water based cleaner are you using.

After simple green I would try Castrol Super clean diluted. Test higher concentrations on inside non-showing side. Some cleaners, even water based, can whiten the plastic that makes it look like the oils where all pulled out.

Use old tooth brushes to get in tight corners and pores.

Pictures might help too?

You could try some rubbing compound. Fine, then medium. Again test in non showing area first.

I was mostly using car wash today, I think Turtle Wax brand and a scrubb brush. I'll may try some of that if the magic eraser doesn't work and yes try a hidden area first for sure.

I've cleaned and cleaned these things and they still look dingy. I think the plastic takes on a haze from all the years. I sprayed my last one with SEM Trim Black and it really made it fresh looking. The paint is such a low sheen one can't tell it was painted. Just a light coat should do it. Try it, you'll like it.

A dip in caustic soda does a VERY nice job of cleaning plastic shrouds, heater box housings, etc. The dull finish that can remain is basically factory, if you want a shine on it you can fog some satin clear over it, or a topical dressing like low gloss vinyl protectant.

It's hard to bring back the sheen of old plastic. I have seen silicone spray used but it does not last long and is a pain to clean if you decide to paint it later.

Car Wash is not strong enough. Simple Green, then Castrol Super Clean, then move on to stronger stuff.

Would TSP powder dilluted in water work. Works good for removing paint on rubber and plastic when you keep and eye on it.

Caustic soda is typically something a radiator shop uses for their boiling tank to do cleaning on radiators.Put a radiator in there too long, it eats at the solder too much and ruins the core. I am going to the this trick Monday and see how it works. I have some crappy looking shrouds to use as test samples. We'll see Scotty boy!!

Wesleys bleachwhite is an excellent degreaser for engine parts and black plastic.

The majic eraser appeared to do an excellent job of making it virtually like new, I did it at the end of the day so I will be interested to see how it looks tomorrow after fully dry, that is why I used the word appears. It really didn't even take much effort and I probalby did the whole thing in about 10 minutes. I'll try to get some pictures tomorrow and post them.

I know most don't have one, but a heated pressure washer is worth a lot if your going to restore cars.

I use it for lot's of restoring chores like fan shrouds and splash guards. I do spray the part with a degreaser and pressure wash it off with scolding hot water. It'll lift ever speck of dirt out of the pores, nooks and crannys...fast!

Original finish is left with no clear to peel or crack. Shouldn't spray any thing on plastic IMO.

Sorry not the best picture but it came out very presentable with the majic eraser.
