Truck: 91 Cummins 727 4x4 w/ 3.07 rear gear.

I have a spare Cummins trans from a 1990 W250, that I'm planning to get rebuilt in the near future. This trans will be going into the truck listed above. I'm looking for suggestions on parts/upgrades, as well as any pitfalls that should be addressed.

Currently I'm looking into using a Mopar Performance rebuild kit, a Trans go TF-2, adding an aluminum deep pan, and also installing a new converter.

The truck is a semi-daily driver, and occasionally tows a 10k Dump Trailer (even with the crappy 3.07 gears). I'm interested in any improvements that I should look into, while the trans is apart. I believe that CRT recommends a heavy duty reinforced low reverse servo spring retainer when using the TF-2.

Are pumps usually of a point of failure with high mileage? Any recommendations on rebuild kits other than the MP kit?

I'm trying to keep the cost down, but there is some budget for improvements, if it means longevity of the trans.

Thanks!
Mike (440trk)

bulkpart or makco distributing.

The only thing I would get from the dealer is the nice reusable pan gasket if you don't already have one.

edit: those two places are the same company. Transmission parts USA is the other big player I could not think of.

have you thought about using one with a l
lock up convertor ?

would hep fuel millage if yours does not have it !

a low stall convertor is a pluss!

Yep, thought about it, but my truck already has the 3.07 gears. Also the cost to swap to a A518 or 47RH for a Diesel, along with the additional lock up converter expense, is not justifiable for me.

I can tell you I worked at a Dodge dealer for 23 years and did tranny's most of them years. We sold all Dodges and trucks and I will say I did not see alot of diesel trucks come in with tranny failures. Most were gas eng trucks. But that said I would overhaul them with all Mopar parts and had a good track record with the Mopar parts. In fact I have Mopar clutches and steels in my 63 and my sons Dart. Also anytime I did a trans with alot of miles it always got a pump. Ones with lower miles I took the pump apart and inspected it and measured play in the rotors and face. Ron

Thanks Ron,

My truck has 235k on it and while I know these trucks were designed to go the miles while working....I have some concerns when towing 10k behind a 235k mile transmission, with a 3.07 gear.

My "Spare" trans came out of a truck with I think 165k or so, but I have NO idea how it was treated.

I'll plan on putting a pump in too.

Thanks!
