I've never replaced a vacuum advance on the distributor before and I was hoping someone could tell me how to do it. It looks like I'm going to have to disassemble part of the distributor to get it out but I can't figure out how. Any help would be great! Thanks

take off the cap & rotor and the 2 phillips screws on the side for the can then look for the end of the arm which the last half of it will be hidden under the plate. You'll see the hole in the top partial plate where the end of the flat horizontle arm has a short vertical nub that comes up & engages that hole. lever the plate up slightly with a screwdriver & slightly move the can/arm till it's free from the hole in the plate then remove the can/arm & reverse that procedure to install the new can. Lever up the plate at the right spot & just enough to free the nub out of the hole in the plate

Unless it's a dual point, then the arm goes over a pin on the plate and a small square wire clip retainer.

I managed to get it off just like you said! Thank you for your help. Unfortunately, the arm on the new can I bought is backwards from the original and that was the only one the parts store carried..so I guess I'll have to do some online shopping.

It's a 1974 440 motor and I'm guessing the stock distributor. I wonder if the vacuum advance arm was flipped over in the later model distributors because I looked online and all of the vacuum advance cans I found were exactly like the one I bought from the parts store. It's exactly the same except the arm is flipped over upside down..

You have a regular OE B/RB electronic CCW rotation dist? The can fits on the side with the arm going inside in the correct general location but the arm is upside down so the nub is pointing down & wont fit the plate? Can you post pics? EDIT I checked both my SB & BB OE electronic dizzys today & the hole in the plate is directly under the tooth/magnet interface (the gap) on both & the nub comes up on both of em into the hole pretty much flush with the flat plate
