Anyone here run Comp Cams .650/.650 lift solid cam? (pn #23-630-5, 324 dur, lobe sep 108) Do you install it straight up (108)or advance it? What does this cam like? 540 ci RB, 3000 lb A-body, back half car, 4-link, P/G. Only runs 1/8 mile.
Thanks, Brian

That's the old Herb McCandless grind cam. I have used them in the past. They work good in about anything you put them in. I always ran mine +4*=104* intake center line. Really wakes the bottom end up!! I always wanted to go further (102* CL), but never had the motor down to do it. Herb's old philosphy used to be "don't get hung up on duration, stick all the lift you can in there". Comp ground that cam on Herb's specs/reccomendations and they (Herb & CC) sold a BUNCH of them.
If you like drag racing, support your local track.

1/8th Mile, I'd want it about 102-103...try to 'use it all up' by the stripe Unless you got really big high flowing heads and make power way upstairs...then I might go 106....you didn't say anything about heads but with a 540 incher I'm sure your "packin'" i believe the McCandless stick was based on the small ports and lots and lots of compression...if you've got a (relatively) bad port you try to open that valve as long as you can so "something" can still get in there at high RPM. The longer the stroke the more closing the valve too late can sometimes work against you, after BDC you start to give up a higher percentage of effective displacement per degree realtive to a same cube motor with a shorter stroke.

Sorry, I forgot about the heads. This engine runs the cast iron Indy heads, some port work, but not max wedge size. This is the same cam that he has run before, and yes, it does go good. Thanks, Brian
