What year did truck switch from carbs to fuel injection? Im looking around at trucks and would like to know which truck have which fuel delivery systems.

Also, what would be required to change a 82 D150 from a slant 6 to a LA 360?

I ask because I've been looking to pick up a truck for a while, and I came across the 82 with a bad slant in it for only $900. But I have a good running LA 360 in my sig car that is being replaced with a mag stroker. So I was thinking that my LA motor could go into the truck. Will the trans bolt up? If so, what would I need to do about the Torque Converter? Engine mounts. I know the oil pan/pick up need to be changed. anything else?

Thanks in advance

I don't know about the year for switching to fuel injection, but the /6 pattern trans won't bolt up to a smallblock. To switch to the LA 360, you'll need a new trans with a smallblock pattern, as well as a converter.

EFI in the trucks started in 1988.

Transmission, converter, flex plate, shields, and all linkage. Then the motor will need a truck pan, mounts, dipstick, radiator, hoses, misc. You will need all the pulleys and brackets for the v-8. Depending on the trucks ignition you will have to either convert to an ecu and modify the trucks wiring harness. If it has an ecu you will just need to modify the harness.

The efi came along with the '88 models, along with the v6 replacing the \6, the 360 didn't get efi until '92, IIRC.
Like was said, different trans, \6 to v8.
If you decide to get the \6 truck, I have an '81 or '82 engine taking up space in my garage ... hint hint ...

Ok, thanks for the info guys. It sounds like all the usual stuff will need to change. I wasn't sure about the slant 6 trans, now I know.

This truck is second on my list. I may have found a running and driving 318 powered, rust free, '89 D150 for under $800. Waiting on a response from the seller. Wish me luck

Roe, it is about time you start trucking

FYI...I just got a call from someone wanting 800$ for a running/driving 86-87 318/727/8-1/4 short widebox very good shape body wise when I installed an alt on it last yr...just when I don't have the cash on hand. if anyone is interested PM me for info.

very ez-swap from slant to v-8 but do need a couple truck specific parts for it.

and the same goes droping a BB engine in there also.

Hey scratchn. Yeah I've been wanting to do a truck for some time now. I used to have an '89 F250 longbed that I got from my uncle, but had to sell when I joined the military. Its seems that every deal that I come.across is always on the opposite side of the country. If this one works out it will be perfect. I already have a picture of what I want it to be when I finish it.

Cruising!
In addition to the previously posted things to change, you may find that all the accessory mounting brackets on the front of the engine will have to be changed as well. (The brackets for the alternator, power steering pump, etc.)

Since you have to buy a transmission, I'd seriously consider swapping in a 518 transmission so you can have an overdrive. Highway crusing will be easier with the extra gear.

You didn't ask, but some of the trucks also had computer controlled carbs on them. I think 1985 360 trucks were the last 1/2 ton trucks to not have an on board computer. I don't know when the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks were computerized. I've heard that some of the real heavy duty 1 tons didn't even have catalytic converters until sometime in the mid to later 1980's.

On a whole different subject, I like your car!

It's everything you're looking for... except "a grand".

Ok, Im reviving this thread. I missed out on the other truck but just came across a 1990 that is complete, was daily driven, but the motor threw a rod. So this truck would be EFI. Would it also have the computer system?

I have a good LA flat tappet motor in my '71 Satellite. Am I able to drop this motor in, and carb it and not have the computer act funky and light up all the dash lights? Would I need to pull of my Performer intake, and put on factory equipment to make it work? Does that truck have sensors that the motor in my 71 wont have a place for?

Trying to figure out what I would need to plan for if I get this truck.
