JR, If you have a few dollars to spend and want the best of both, go to waldronexhaust.com and look at VOE/DCE mufflers. (Forgot to add these are the ones I built; theirs look like stockers the way they are made) Tom Hand

Haha, understood. Then lets say I want to get it as close as I can to them. Quiet enough at cruising speed where a conversation could be had in the cabin without yelling, or quiet enough that my ears don't ring after a 4 hour drive.
Once you quiet down the exhaust you will hear everything else it was drowning out , rattles under the dash , in the doors , the trunk , and the big one ROAD NOISE ...
Long case Dyno max turbo muffler , a bullet glasspack type muffler as a resonator ... I'm pretty sure Accutate LTD. sells 2.5" stock looking resonator tail pipes ... and replace the H with an X pipe .
This is right on the money. Order a pair of Dynomax Super Turbo 17748's, & then run a pair of 2.5" flowpath GOOD glasspacks 18" long back next to the gas tank, then tips coming right off of them. If you need something good to run at the back of the system, let me know. I can build you some chambered or packed resonators.

I have a 3-1/2" dia. 2 Chamber Flowbastards under my red Charger with an X Pipe reduced down th 3" out the back thru the stock R/T tips with the tapered (2-1/4) portion of the stock tips eliminated with no resonators & it is loud. All home built in my garage. I get more compliments all of the time while driving or at the cruise nights that it is the sweetest sounding "full" exhaust car everyone has heard. I must be getting old. To me it is too loud for as much as i drive it. I may trying adding the glass pack resonators in the tail pipes on either side of the gas tank this year.

The most worth while part and money best spent was a TTI exhaust system for my cars. Use there mufflers, super turbos. My 440 with headers and a X pipe is really quite until I put my foot into it, but it's still not loud. Personally I will always use H pipes in the future because the X pipe makes it almost too quite and sounds weird when you stand on it. Checkout this short video of my 440 smoking the tires at 30 mPH roll for second, the motor is not even loud. web page

I agree. Years ago, well before the availability of today's mufflers, I simply put stock replacement, 2 1/4" aftermarket mufflers on my Charger. It was pretty quiet. I replaced them with the DynoMax Super Turbo (17747) mufflers and it was louder, and after a short period of time, they did start to drone at certain rpms.
This was with factory exhaust manifolds, 3.23 gear and stock torque converter.

i went from a 2.5" flowmaster knockoff obnoxious loud system to a 3" system using a large caSE DYNOMAX SUPER TURBO MUFFLER (#17793). man was the car nice and quiet. i could talk to my passengers,hear the radio and not get a headache while driving it. still had a nice deep tone behind it too. i'm sure if you look into it they probably make a large case 2.5" muffler like it.. the 3". http://www.summitracing.com/parts/wlk-17793/overview/

by reading a bunch of posts over the years it seems that guys that used a tti kit and super turbos and used stock exhaust manifolds always complain about the dreaded drone. guys that used headers with the super turbos didn't experience that drone.

I use stock mufflers on my 68 Coronet. Years ago I used glasspacks, turbo mufflers, etc. The mufflers that I used are the MSL mufflers. AP Exhaust makes them. They sound great. It's a stock muffler. It's not a performance muffler. It gives a period correct exhaust sound. And they are not loud at all. Very happy with them. http://www.apexhaust.com/automotive-light-truck-2/overview/ I just replaced the mufflers and pipes on my 91 Crown Vic police car. I used the Walker Sound FX mufflers. The car is a factory dual exhaust with h-pipe. These are very quiet too. Very happy with these too. Someone else mentioned about these mufflers on this thread. Give these mufflers a try. I would try the MSL's first. I think you will like them.

Yes. I believe that all of what you stated is correct. That is why I stated I had manifolds. Also, it occurs at a certain rpm and engine load. Guys with more gear and/or looser converter, or lighter car may experience less drone, and/or they will get through the drone zone earlier and faster and will be a non-issue for them.
