I lunched the timing belt in my '04 Sebring this morning, it was due to be changed anyway but I had been putting it off until the weather got better. Oh well.

Now what are the chances I have bent valves? Searching online there seems to be conflicting info on whether this is an interference engine or not. I read that valve to valve interference is possible, but unlikely? This happened at low RPM and as soon as I tried to restart it I knew what it was.

Also, looking at the timing belt kits on Rockauto, it says there are 2 versions of the timing belt tensioner, hydraulic and mechanical how do you tell which one you have?
Has anyone on here done one?

I's be thinking that is a stroked Neon motor, so yes it should be an interference engine. But if it was spinning slow then maybe, it might be a flip of a coin. I would only buy either a factory or Gates belt. The dealer should be able tell you which tensioner. Be sure to put a water pump also.

Ive put many timing belts on 2.4s AFTER the belt broke and all was well with the valves, so you should be ok. The Hyd. tensioner will be attached to the block with 2 bolts and will push on the tensioner pulley to tighten the belt. The mechanical tensioner is a single unit that is made with the pulley. I also recommend water pump replacement while you are there. Do yourself a favor and use a NEW pump, not a reman.

2.4 is a non interference engine.

The wifes broke last year at 25 MPH.New pump belt etc and all is good.If really turning RPMs might have valves tap each other.Oh when you do the belt the rear cam has to be set back off the timing mark.First one we did at the shop took 3 days.Had the marks dead on and it wouldnt idle.There are some good how toos on the web.Rocky

Thanks for the replies. I've been looking at how to's and have read the trick about moving the rear cam sprocket off a half a tooth.

I removed the upper cover today and saw the belt is shredded and really loose. It didn't brake completely in half, but there are pieces hanging off, and the timing marks arn't in line.
