Years ago when I first built this car I bought a MOPAR Performance Electronic Ignition system for it. It worked perfect for the last 20 years or till I tore the car apart for a re-do. In that time I gave away the orange box to a friend that used it and now Im in the process of getting the car finished and Im at the point of the distributor and what to do? Do a points conversion or get a new ECU box...and what one. One from the local parts store? OR another orange box??

What should I do?

Go on the 'bay and buy a used MSD 6A for $40 or Accel 300+ for $100 with matching coil. I've done both, both have never failed.

I prefer petronix.
haven't owned a car with one for more than 5 years I guess, so can't say beyond that, but they were the fastest installs on anything I have ever done that had to do with a distributor. including putting in a new distributor.

I also run an orange MP ECU I bought around 1998 and its still on my 63 running 10's with no trouble. But if you buy a new one I hear many people say they have problems with the newer orange ones. So if you stay with the Mopar ign I would get the chrome box as they seem to be fine from what I hear on here. Ron

One of the easiest choices these days is the Rev'Nator (orange box compatible), with an integrated RPM limiter. No real reason to use an MSD-6A for a street car with that on the market.
Using an OEM ECU bracket (1972 and after) makes this look *factory*, if not year-correct.
You can even get new engine harnesses modified for electronic ignition if you don't want to hack you own.

If you want to stay close to the OEM look (no electronic ECU on the firewall), the options are :
- A Pertronix module in a points distributor (I'd say keep a spare module in the glovebox, in case you leave the ignition on and fry it),
- A Points distributor triggering a MSD-6A or equivalent box, hidden away somewhere (quite a bit of wiring to hide if you're going for the OEM look).
- An HEI conversion, with the HEI module on a heat sink bolted under the electronic distributor you already have.

I have used Mallory Unilite distributors on customers cars with excellent results. Mallory suggests that you use the Mallory Ignition 29351 - Mallory Active Power Filter
Or
Mallory has a conversion kit so you can convert a points distributor.
