I was considering replacing my coil as it was damaged wear the coil wire attaches. Currently have a MSD Blaster coil which I have mounted on my six pack intake in the stock location. Car is a BH car with a 500 stroker. So it I replace it is it better to mount somewhere else or is it still OK where it is at? Which coil is recommended?

i also have my blaster in the stock location for a 6pac (sideways) and it's been like that for 20 years give or take. i have heard bad things about the newer blaster 2 coils (red ones)leaking. my suggestion is to get the high vibration blaster which is essentially an epoxy coil. same power as the blaster 2 but no leaky! it will also fit in the stock 6pac location! a win win

Most OE coils were more or less horizontal. I assume your is also.

Aftermarket coils recommend vertical mount to prevent oil leaks and failure. Many mount them in stock location and it works... but sometimes it doesn't and early failure occurs.

If the stock location works for you I'd suggest the epoxy potted Blaster. It is recommended for any orientation as there is no oil to leak.

If it's an option, vertical with a canister type coil, and with any coil, the area with the least amount of heat is what I'd recommend.

Ma mounted the coil sideways for decades & got by with it, with it being said nowadays that sideways can possibly cause an early failure (if oil filled). So I guess vertical would be the proactive way to go if you are willing to fab or buy a bracket & if where you mount it it looks OK straight up

I mount my coils vertically on the inner fenderwell. Easy to get to and out of the way.

As for the newer MSD Blaster II coils, they are absolute junk. The terminals are soft and the threads strip easily. $45 down the tubes for me.

I have a new red blaster 2 & I'm unsure how old it is (been sitting on it for a long time) & is there any identifying features that would tell me if it is or is not one of the inferior ones?

I have a red Blaster 2 on my sixpack Charger. I peeled the MSD sticker off & painted black to look OEM. It's been on my car for like 15+ years without any trouble.
