What exactly does this rule apply to? Just slip on collectors? I have muffles installed on my car that are bolted directly to the header with 3 bolts, am I required to tether the muffle to the header?

Been wondering about this also?? Maybe I'll just pull the mufflers off.

The wording says nothing about mufflers so technically "muffler tethers" aren't required.

There's no "approved" tether to address that situation.

All that said, I'm sure NHRA will make a clarification soon.

I have tri Y collectors. I also have an X-pipe exhaust with 1/2" bolts holding it to the chassis. I was told this was fine as it is a tight fit. I then showed the tech guy a huge conduit clamp around the X-pipe and X in the chassis. I think the Tether rule is BS requiring a NHRA approved overpriced tether. But, guys that were not doing enough to prevent exhaust from coming off caused this rule to come about.

A local guy lost a muffler with two 3/8 Bolts holding it to the chassis. The car was totaled.

"Effective Jan. 1, 2014, removable multi-piece exhaust collectors/stacks must be
securely fastened with an NHRA accepted header tether, such as Lokar’s
1400009 or 1401009 to prevent loss of collector/stacks during competition.
Flexible tubing or “flex pipe” prohibited in all categories. If mufflers are used, they
must be securely attached to exhaust system and car body or frame."

Do you guys really think they're going to check part numbers for SFI? Come on. A couple of stainless clamps a piece of braided cable and you're done. When has anyone bent under your car to check a part, not to mention a number? Heck no one even asked to seem my license last year.

There is no SFI number on the tether systems. If there were they would be triple the cost. As for checking the cars, well I have had it done a few times over the last few years. Usually when racing out of division. It is usually a random thing but it does happen. But generally only at Divisional or National events. As for mufflers as long as they are secured to the frame you don't need tethers. Also you can also stitch weld each tube for 1" and you don't need them either. This ruler pertains to slip on collectors only.

All the years I've raced NEVER once has the inspector
even got down on a knee to look under my car... only
once or twice did I have to open the trunk to see
if I had a ground wire on the fuel cell when that
rule came out

That is one nice thing about RT 66, Tech is very thorough. I've seen them bounce cars that raced at other local tracks for years.

Some of you guys are getting to worked up about this spend the 60.00 dollars and be done with it.This is a NHRA hot button this year and will be enforced at NHRA divisional and national events.Big difference in the way tech is done at a divisional/national compared to your local bracket race.I personally spend way over 60.00 dollars before even leaving the drive way.
