If I was to use stock springs with say the Comp XE268, what problems might I run into? I know I will loose power and valve float will come in sooner, but how much am I really going to loose in the heart of the powerband?

Am I risking anything dangerous.

not worth doing IMO. If theres a problem with the cam the manufacture isnt going to want to help you if you didnt use there springs.

I wouldn't. Stock springs have not only weakened after many years and mile usage but they don't like much more lift than the stock cams. Use what your cam manufacturer recommends and be safe. Springs aren't that spendy compared to the damage that can be done using the wrong ones.

Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks. But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

GTX MATT,
We never suggest using stock springs with any cam upgrade. Most of our hyd flat tappet cams use springs that are only $88 a set and right now we are discounting all cam, springs and lifters $100. So...you would be basically getting free springs +++ some.
Either way, I would repalce the springs.

Change the springs and be done with it. Change the seals too while you're that into it. Just mt $.02

The XE268 cam is a very aggressive fast ramp cam with a lot of lift for the duration. I wouldn't be surprised if you get into a valve float issue right in the meat of the cam's power band and its likely with the lift the cam has you will have you will have a coil bind issue.

All in all its a real bad idea to try and use stock springs with that cam and you will very likely break more parts than the cost of the correct springs.

Here is the results a one coil bind incident. Make sure to check your guide to retainer clearance too. There should be at least .060 clearance at full valve lift. This along with a cracked cylinder, ruined head and cam:

the recommended comp 901's for that cam are less than $70, and can use the stock retainers (as long as you replace the rotator retainers on the exhaust valves--of so equipped-- with standard ones)
