Swapping in a 97 5.9 magnum into my 1981 Crew cab. Converting to a Carb, but have heard that i may need to use the existing external regulator with the new style alternator. Is this correct? Thanks for the help!

the alt is externally regulated, just like the older style.
it is just built into the computer.

you can use the standard external regulators, you are used to with the new alt.

I currently use the single field wiring and ground one of the field wires to make it charge in my old coronet.
swapped in a 5.9 mag a few years back.

definitely no problem using the stock regulator with the magnum alternator we do that on all of our kits. just make sure the regulator has a good ground. I always recommend running a ground strap to the back of the block. I don't like relying on rusty or painted sheet metal.
