Hi, I just replaced the accelerator cable on my 1981 step side D-150 daily driver. I installed it without reading the instructions as usual. When I went to throw out the box, I saw that it was supposed to be squirted with cable lube first. Is lube really necessary? The old cable was bone dry and still working after 180.000 miles, but I wanted to prevent a future roadside break down.

Not that it matters, but I bought it from Summit Racing, and it is made in Israel.

Thanks for your opinions, Steve

I've never lubed them as new... but have also not had that particular instruction. For the few minutes it would take, I'd go ahead and lube it. My DD's that see salt duty do get some lithium grease from time to time.

I'm still pondering this situation...I could use some more opinions from the weekend crowd. (Please)

If its easy to do, do it.
Even if you don't it's not going to break or bind.

I'd try this stuff. It wicks pretty well and with a little taping, I'd bet you could pressurize the cable from the carb end and lube the entire cable length.

Call the cable manufacturer to see if thier cable housing has a inner teflon lined lining in it or not if not then lube it, if so forget about it The stock OEM ones from Mopar had a inner liner that never needed lubing

Lube it...

How many times have you heard 'failure due to over-lubrication'???
