Time to replace the tires on my wife's 2012 Jeep Patriot, Latitude 4x4 with 215/60R17s. Pretty straight treads on now, fine in the summer but not much for traction in the winter. Looking for a good winter tire for snow/ice/safety. Any recommendations? What are you all running? Something that is good in winter but won't drive her nuts in the summer with a ton of road noise/bad mpgs...

I have Michelin LTX's on my ram 1500 4x4. They wear very well, but do not do so good in snow. Okay in fresh un-driven snow, poor on packed snow/ice. I also have Treadwrights on another set of rims. They are excellent in snow, but wear fast and need tire rotations or they get noisy. Trying to get everything in one tire limits the ability to be really good at any one thing.

I just installed a set of General Altimax RT43 on our CX-7 (same class as your Patriot). This is a brand new tire from General with really good road test reviews. In the 2 weeks I have driven on them, I have encountered cold rain conditions (just above freezing), light snow (2-3"), bitter cold conditions (sub-zero temps with both dry pavement and drifted areas), and heavier snow fall. This 2 ton wagon rides smooth, quiet, and like it's on rails! I am truly impressed with these tires (FWD with ETC, no 4x4)! On the CX-7, there is only ONE tire available, and that's the Bridgestone Dueller the factory shipped them with. There is NO WAY I'd ever get another set of those! Noisy, lousy ride, surprisingly excellent wet traction, no traction on all other conditions. I had to plus-size to get the Generals (I'm now 0.2" less in diameter and 1/2" wider than stock). I paid a whopping $460.00 for the four 225-65R17 delivered from Tire Rack, and had them installed at the local Ford dealership (a Tire Rack recommended installer) for exactly ZERO DOLLARS!!! I'm not sure how anyone can beat a deal like this!!!! http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=General&tireModel=AltiMAX+RT43
