I understand that it is part of the Decor Package. Also armrest bases are black. That was our research findings on my 69 RR.

I was asking this because I told a friend that is restoring a GTX Convertible that I thought that all 1968 B Bodies got the black buttons on the outside door handles. Then I started questioning myself about that fact and wondered if Chrysler either changed them over early to the all Chrome or continued them into 1969 with the black buttons. I did a few searches but after doing a search on Images on 1968 B Bodies most had the black buttons but almost all cars had been restored and I wondered just how right these restorations were. The GTX that is being restored by the owner has been around a long time with many repaints and fixes. It has all Chrome outside door handles on it now, but I would put the Black buttons on.

My 68 with a production date in October 67 has chrome buttons. It had been repainted by the time I got it, but every other thing on the car is numbers matching original in this pic from 87 or 88. I don't see why anyone would have changed it. I also believe both the 69 Road Runners my brother owned had the chrome ones also. I'll have to see if I can find a picture of those.
Edit: I did find some pictures, they both were chrome. One was a totally original car, the other not. My brother's 68 Runner has black buttons.

My '69 Coronet 500 has the black button door handles. I think it may have been built in late '68? My project '69 R/T hardtop I think also has the black button handles and the 1 through 15 x10 speedometer. Anyone know when they changed the speedometer face to the 10 through 150 style?

Never say never with "Mother Mopar",but my understanding is that 1968 handles had black buttons. Also, some early 1969 cars received left over stock, but I don't know when exactly the chrome buttons were introducted. Mopar would use the remaining '68 stock on the early '69 cars until this supply was exhausted, then it was on to the new batch of handles with chrome buttons. The few black button NOS handles that found their way to dealership stock stock would have been boxed for dealership sale to the public and not considered for assembly line consumption for that reason.
