My daily driver is a Reliant 2.5L with 68k original miles, I am the second owner. On my way to work I started smelling burning oil, looked behind me and saw a large cloud of blue smoke. I had just left home so I turned around and drove back since the oil pressure idiot light had not come on yet. Popped the hood and I see the back cover to the engine is now gone. So could it have loosened over time and fell off? Wouldn't I have noticed an oil leak if it was coming loose? And where do I find another, and what exactly is it called?

It's a dry heat
there should be a rubber coater plug in there.

not to uncommon for them to pop out, piece of cake to put back in

Any ideas on where to find one? I looked around for what fell off, but I live on a highway so it could be hidden in the ditch anyhere.

Its called the rear cam plug.they are about 7 bucks at the parts store. To put it in right you have to remove the vc and loosen the rear cam tower. install it and tourqe the tower down. or you could coat it with rtv and press it in by hand.

Excellent, I was hoping it wasn't going to be an expensive undertaking

Is there a cover that goes over it too? It looks like something else goes over the top of it. Never really looked at that part of the engine while it was on there. Found the plug on rockauto for $3

Change the PCV while you are there. It might be building up pressure.Make sure the hoses to the air box are in good shape also.Rocky

You should remove the cover and rear cam cap as said. If you press that plug back in without taking the cap off, I'll bet you that it'll be back out within days.
My kid had a 89 Daytona that that plug fell out a couple of times....just pressed a new one in the last time, and it popped out and that was the end of a good turbo motor!!!

No cover, just get a new cam seal for it and install it as described. I've never had one fall out, but at least it is an easy fix. The carbed models had the air pump that bolted to that side of the head, that's what all the extra threaded bosses and such are for.

Not all carbed models had an air pump...

Thanks guys!I have the plug and a PVC valve on its way from rockauto, it's looking like she will be back on the road by this weekend for $7. I love driving my V10 3/4 ton pickup but it would kill me at the gas pump if I have to keep driving her to work

Well, an update on my Plymouth. Pulled the valve cover, loosened the cam tower, and installed the new plug. Put everything back together, and the car fired right up and ran fine. After a few seconds though, the fan motor started clicking, the engine stumbled and died. It will start right up after letting it sit and run a few seconds and do the same thing. If you try to start it right after dying it will start but die immediately. What could be the problem now? I only disconnected two wire connectors for ease of access but reconnected both, and I do not see any pinched wires under the valve cover.
