R/T with the 440 and original stock exhaust manifolds.. The 67 manifold is clocked ( where it attaches to the exhaust pipe ) differently than any other years.. Wondering if this is why Dodge changed the clocking). Trying to remove mine to replace the exhaust gasket.. Seems as if the steering column is in the way, I think I installed the engine before reinstalling the column when I restored it..

If I remove drivers side motor mount and jack up the engine will that give me enough room to remove exhaust manifold..

Flying back home to my car to repair it so I can load it on the trailer for here. Any "beforehand " help would be great as my time will be limited. Thanks

I don't mean to be a jerk, but why would you need an exhaust manifold gasket? They didn't come that way. I don't use em. Ever. I would guess that motor is fresh from your post. I know those manifolds warp a little over the years. Did you make sure the mating surfaces on both the head and manifold are flat before assembly? Just saying if you blew a gasket already it might become an on going problem.

I have mechanical Aptitude.
I can screw up anything.

It'd be work but I'd go ahead & take the colume out cuz you sure dont want to scratch/mar/damage anything. I'm assuming that a gasket was used between manifold & the head & that it is leaking. FYI it would seal bare IF both surfaces are flat like they were brand new & likely they ain't now & some high temp (red?) permatex can probably seal well or use a gasket if you prefer. I use gaskets there myself

Exhaust manifolds were machined flat, and yes I used a gasket when I assembled it.. After it blew I took off the manifold and slid the gasket out, retightening the manifold and now it is worse than it was...
All my tools are here in Florida now so taking out the steering column is probably undoable...

So nobody here has taken off one while in the car??

Do u have power steering? The only way I could get on the rearmost manifold bolt was with a European wrench that is bent at neck, while laying on back under car, and turn about 1/16 turn at a time. I was just tightening and not removing. Good luck and sorry.
Nice car! My red brother..

If you want to pull the column you need a half inch socket/ratchet for the lower 4 bolts on the firewall, a deep 7/16 for the two that hold the column to the dash, a medium sized philips head or similar to knock the roll pin out of the coupler, and a hammer to hit the screwdriver with.

Now I need to pin those needles, got to feel that heat

Just loosen the manifold, cut a notch out on the bottom of the gasket bolt holes. Slide it in and tighten. Done! Especially since you are limited in time.

You must not have read my previous response.. Already tried this and it got worse.. Unstartable even... A chunk of gasket must be on it still and I cannot get the manifold far enough out to see or scrape it.

Wonder if I did the firewall bolts and the two column if it would go down far enough to give it enough room without taking it off the steering box??

Harbor frt makes a long skinny ratchet, 1/4" one end 3/8" the other) both ends flex.. With a shorty socket you can do wonders with it..

Use a Remflex gasket set and you"ll not have this problem again. I think I took my manifold off by double nutting the stud and removing it. It's been a while so I could bee mistaken.

So your saying removing all the studs will enable me to remove the exhaust manifold?
Already have the Remflex gaskets purchased.. If I could just get the darn thing temporarily going without the HUGE leak it has ( since removing the bad gasket and just reinstalling the manifold) to get it moved I would be happy....

Yes, removing the studs will allow you to simple pull the manifold up and out of the car.

When taking out the exhaust studs remember that some go into the water jacket so you must drain your radiator or you will have anti freeze coming out the stud hole.

Seems as if most of the studs came out, but I will try this when I get to the car again... TY

This is beginning to sound a lot like one of my projects...the $600.00 washer Like I am going to replace the washer on the bathroom faucet and $600.00 later, I have a new bathroom sink and fresh paint on the walls to match

This is a big block , ALL the exhaust studs are WET , if you plan on pulling the all the studs ... silly to even consider it ... you better start by draining the cooling system because things are going to get MESSY.

Nevermind if they are in there and you have no leaks around them I can just see the next topic after you button things up ... why is there coolant leaking from my exhaust manifold ???

Unbolt the motor mounts and jack up the motor on one side or pull the steering column ...

Yeah I agree. Pull the one long through bolt from the driver side motor mount and raise the engine. It will come off. I've also tried 383s and 440s without exhaust gaskets like the factory did. Mine always leaked awful. An exhaust manifold gasket can be a bad thing too. It insulates the manifold from the head causing it not to dissipate heat and overheat and warp. A good compromise in my opinion are solid paper header gaskets like Mr Gasket sells.
