I have a 4 speed in a 70 Coronet that I can't get to go into reverse. I rebuilt the trans with new bearings and senc. It shifts throught the 4 gears great but won't go into reverse for anything. Please help

Two very basic questions: Have you adjusted the linkage rods? I usually use a drill bit or allen wrench through the alignment holes in the shifter "feet." Second, do you have the reverse lever on the transmission the right way. Another thing to check is whether or not the clutch is completely releasing. With the inspection cover off, and the clutch pedal in, you should be able to get a .060" feeler gauge between the disc and pressure plate. Hope this helps.

Do you have the lever on upside down? It happens

I can't get the lever to move when I put a wrench on it from under the car. I have tried turning the drive shaft while trying to shift it into reverse. And I can't get it to shift

If all you did was change the bearings and synchros then the problem is the side cover. The center rear bolt on the cover that has a longer shoulder then the others is an alignment bolt that keeps the cover exactly where it should be so the reverse interlock has the correct clearance between it and the 1-2 blade. Drain the trans, loosen the bolts and remove the middle rear one, now tap the cover up gently til you feel it move up, now try reverse and it should work. When you reinstall that bolt keep pushing up on the cover as you tighten it and if it locks you out again the somewhere along the line someone changed the shift shafts to a non-matched set. You can use a standard 5/16 bolt in its place if its still the problem, not the ultra correct fix but at least it will work, good luck.

The factory service manual explains how to adjust the reverse interlock by adjusting the side cover. Very simple to do. The description above will get you there. You are supposed to be able to feel an slight interference when it is right.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

The side cover has nothing to do with reverse, the reverse actuator is in the main case.

My guess is that if you can't get reverse to engage either in the static mode or while the engine is running then its one of two things:

a) there is a problem with the detent ball/switch jamming the reverse actuator (MOST LIKELY)

b) since the reverse gear and shaft are steel-on-steel the gear is possible siezed to the shaft (not likely unless the case got water in it)

Either way, the side cover has to come off. Pull out the detent assembly but you'll have to grab the ball from inside the case. Reinstall the detent assembly making sure the ball sits correctly in the actuator.

Sorry, but the side cover has EVERYTHING to do with the Reverse lockout; the cam on the internal Reverse lever makes contact with the internal 1-2 shift lever to prevent engagement of reverse, if the side cover is too low the cam will contact the 1-2 shift lever even if the lever is in Neutral.

As suggested a few posts above, I think the reverse lockout lever may need adjusting. The lever is held in place by the side cover, so you'll need to remove the side cover to see how it works in relation to the two other levers on the backside (inside) of the cover.

Make sure everything is in neutral before you install the side cover.

I talked to both Passon and Brewers about a similar problem at the Nats and they both said the same thing, check the shifter and if not that then the side cover needs adjustng.
