Do the boxes, orange or otherwise really fail that often? To read these comments you'd think no car has lasted on the road for any length of time. Granted I only have a small circle of Mopar friends, but I have never ever heard of anyone having an ignition box fail.

I went down to my local auto parts store and purchased a remanufactured single points distributor ( new bushings, etc ) and installed the Pertronix Ignitor II..... Working great...........

Pertronix sells completely new distributors all set up with there internals. This is what I would like to use. The question I have is how do you modify the curve on one of their distributors?

With the Pertronix billet distributor and Ignitor III I got 3 sets of springs, and 3 sets of clips to set max advance. I had it in my 383 set to 24 degr initial, and with the clips I set another 12 degrees dynamic advance, total 36.
A very good package in my opinion.

Aside from them failing personal experience , orange box from my 2005 crate Hemi pulled timing out above 4000 rpm , this is why they sux ... unless you have a distributor with 30 degrees of mechanical advance , then the timing being pulled out is probably a good thing ...

YMMV

Well I bought my orange box in 1999 and it has and still is flawless and never misses a beat. It seems the newer ones must have problems as mine has worked great and never failed and does not pull any timing out at higher rpm's. In fact when my son used it on his 400 he shifted at 6500 and it worked great. When he put MSD on the car it ran the same and did not go any faster. Right now I have it on my 63 Sport Fury and its running 10.70's and never misses a beat. If you have an older orange box it might work fine but it seems most that have trouble have bought their orange box in the last 5 or so years. You can see my orange box on the firewall just behind the carb next to the voltage reg. Ron

Ron have you had it on a something , like a chassis dyno, showing it doesn't pull timing out or are you just ASSuMEing it doesn't because you are happy with the performance , or lack of performance ???

I think, since I have it already, I'm going to go with the Mopar orange-box kit that I have, with new Mopar wires, NGK plugs, and a Blaster 2 coil. After all, I have the Streetmaster 440 intake, which is worthless above 4500, according to everyone, so I really don't care about how much timing it pulls out above 4000.

If the orange box goes TU, I've got a Crane Hi-6 laying around somewhere for continued fun.

Thanks for the responses and the advice, everyone!!!

No its never been on a chassis dyno. I use my advance meter timing light and watch the timing when I have some rev it up over 5K. I see no timing pulled like that and yes I am happy with its performance. And the fact when we took it off my sons Dart and put MSD on his car and it ran no faster at all. Ron

Many do say they have had the EXU box fail and many say the orange box pulls timing at higher RPM which I have no reason to not believe them. But all I can tell you is I bought my orange box in 1999 and its still going strong as it has never failed and I also have never had the ballast resister fail on me. But many do fail as I do carry a spare orange box and a spare resister in my glovebox but have never had to use them yet. As I was saying it seems the orange boxes bought in the last maybe 5 to 10 years seem to be giving some trouble. Ron

The key to the orange box is the spare stocker in the trunk when it craps out.

When the car starts to slow down for no reason look no further then the MSD. Used two different setups work fine then fail sometimes in as little a 2 month's. Use a stock Mopar control box off of a late 80s truck or van no problems at all, pickup plates that's another story hence my pertronix/ point preference

Guess I've been lucky. I've never personally had an orange box go bad. I did see one get so hot it melted all the coating off the internals on a buddy's pickup. Seems I read Ehrenberg saying that a stock box is more than sufficient for a street/strip vehicle. I used the Mopar Performance distributor with a stock box and shifted at 6300. Never had a problem and I ran a 12.80 with a stock 67 440, 9.5 to 1 comp, 280/.474 cam, unported 452 heads, 2800 stall convertor, 3.91 gears, in a 67 B-body.

I was going to buy a Pertronix kit for my car but a Pure Stock racer talked me out of it. From his experience with re-curving distributors on his Sun distributor machine, he found that many Mopar distributors suffer from spark scatter when mated with the Pertonix I, II, and III kits. He's re-curved hundreds of Ford, Chevy and Mopar distributors and said it's not as big of an issue with Ford or Chevy distributors. He also went on to say that his Challenger actually went slower in the quarter mile when he tried all three Pertonix kits versus the heavy-duty breaker points he currently uses. He also said he talked extensively with Pertonix techs but never could get an answer for the spark scatter issue.

And of course he checks shaft play before doing the re-curve to make sure the shaft and or bushings aren't worn out.

So if you're looking for optimum performance and you must run a Pertonix kit, find someone with a distributor machine and test it out.

Has anybody ever put a pertronix in an electronic distrubtor? I have a low mile orange box distributor conversion set and would like to use the distrubutor in my next project but with a pertronix in it, mainly for cosmetic reasons.

A good solution is to hide the Mopar box..
Like under the battery holder.
That way you keep the Mopar electronic system together.
But as posted previously, dump that Orange box and step to a Chrome box..

Just my $0.05...

Great Idea about hiding the Mopar box.
