This guy called Mopar Charlie in fla is telling me that on my 68 ply val w/ 273 I can't put a deep oil pan it won't fit the chassis and never use a high volume oil pump , also said that no timing chain tensioner was ever used on small blocks . Anyone agree with this ? Who makes a pan that will fit ? What's your thought on the high volume oil pump. Too

Put any pan you like on it,how many qts do you need?. do you need a HV oil pump?? Depends(but most do not). Timing chain tensioners, lol I'll leave that one alone.

Are you & him bench racing or are you having specific issues with your 273?. Is this a daily driver? No factory tc tensioner but MP has one. A hi vol pump costs power & excessively wears the inter gear (not a dealbreaker in itself) but is only used/needed if a std pump with a hi psi spring cannot maintain pressure because of either racing clearances and or a high mileage worn eng with excessive clearances. More info please.

MC does have a point on the high v/high p pump on a stock pan though. You COULD pump the pan dry if the drain back is not good or the oil is not up to temp.

Mopar Charlie is very traditional Old Skool.
After 30-40+ years he's opinionated on what he knows works and doesn't work. Unless you know for a fact that you are smarter than him, the unwashed has a better chance to heed his advice than to not.

Go to www.moparchat.com then scroll down to & click on "circle track chat" then peruse Charles Sanborns' oiling mods that are in a sticky at the top of the page. This will give you an opportunity to gain some knowledge from the real "Mopar Charlie"

with old charlie.

I had to notch my K to clear my 7 quart pan on my 340 E body.

Haven't used a Hi volume pump either since like the early 80s.
My current 340 that I built in 2007 got a used standard pump from my previous motor.

I have run this motor out at bonneville and area now at over 100 mph 4500-5000 RPM for like 4-5 miles at a time. Never hurt the motor with a standard oil pump on it. Doesn't sound like much?, try it sometime.

And the next time I take it out of the car, it is getting the standard pan put back on, because it does hang pretty low and I have beat it out at least twice now.

I am talking about a street engine at maybe 6500 rpm.

I'm not young enough to have hot rodded the magnum engines, so can't comment about timing chain tension-er. I have never used one in SB mopar.

Stock style pan waiting to go on, I cut up all my stock pan years ago to make hi volume pans out of them before I could afford the 7 qt milodon pan I have on it now.

I had to put a little notch in the lip of the k-member in my Dart Sport for their 8 quart pan to ease engine removal & installation. The 8 qt. also limits which headers you can use because of the wider sump bottom. (TTI fit very well.)
Their 7 quart pans may have fixed the header problem, but I would call and/or ask around to make sure.

Most applications don't need a high volume and/or pressure oil pump. I use a standard pump in my race car.

I've never seen a chain tensioner in an OEM LA small block and I've never used one.
