I need to modify my fuel system on my 68 charger for the FAST system that's on it's way. I already have a return line plumbed in from a previous disaster so that's covered. I'm leaning towards the Tanks Inc PA series fuel pump module (cut hole in stock tank, has it's own tray/baffle and comes with a walbro 255 L/hour pump) I'd be doing this to a new tank as my car still has it's original 1968 tank in it. I could get the fuel pump recess they sell and have it welded but I was wondering if I could just space the tank down about 1" or so and cut some sort of inspection port type of cover into the truck floor. This way I could service it if need be without dropping tank.

I guess I'd like to know if that's even possible. My thought was the tank is held in by metal straps and putting some kind of 1" spacer between it and trunk floor wouldn't be too difficult. Since I've never installed or removed the tank from this car I thought I'd ask.

whether or not I use the recess for the top of the tank, I'd like to install something like this into the trunk floor for servicing. I've never seen one used for this purpose

I think all the effort to install that inspection cover is more work than dropping the tank if there was an issue. Either one is only necessary IF there's a problem. You seem to be expecting a problem!

Does your tank have a large enough flat spot to accommodate that pump flange ?!?!?

lol good point. yes i guess i do expect problems sometimes!
i dont have a large enough flat area. instructions say to hammer and dolly the area flat after hole is cut. i read that on the internet so it must be true

I don't think a 1 inch spacer will fit with stock straps and j-bolts.

I know there is some adjustment to tighten it up, but it is such a pain to get a tank up,even fully extended, I cannot imagine there is an extra inch there at all.

your other choice is that external surge tank instead.

I agree with Andrew. You could put in a recess in a new tank and not worry about using your old one.

Post some pics of what you end up doing, I like the idea of an access point in the trunk.

Until you gotta do it with a full tank.

I'm looking at doing the same thing, and I thought the Aeromotive Phantom 340 deal looked to be a bit cleaner install.

Aeromotive Phantom 340

That's a slick setup but it doesn't address the clearance issue between the tank and trunk floor.

I hung my Aeromotive pump on the outside. With the help of a couple friends, we designed and fabricated a tank for my Charger that fits in the stock location using the stock straps and filler neck. It has a sump and baffles built inside. It was spaced down about 3/4" using some aluminum channel and the sending unit was recessed down for clearance.

Here's a couple pictures. First one shows the sump, baffles and internal plumbing.

2nd shot is tacked together and hung in place to check fitment. Closed cell foam insulation was used between the trunk floor and the aluminum channels as well as between the straps and the tank on the final install.

Here's the pump mounting on the rear of the tank.

Lastly the filler neck. (it has a bung in it here as I was pressure checking it)

This is true, but it seems much simpler to use the phantom 340 pump and baffle, space the tank down as required, and perhaps modify the tank straps or j-bolts as needed.

Love that fabricated tank too.

It is way more expensive, but it does come with a higher output pump and it looks like it will be easier to install since you don't need a big flat spot in the bottom of the tank for the baffle.

But you somehow need to space the tank down for clearance. I'd rather install the Tanks parts and also be a few bucks ahead. The Aero units may flow more but it's pointless if you don't need it and it's just being sent back to the tank!!
