,,tried different ones/styles trying to gain somthing such as torque or top end horsepower or both and what were the end result of it, what style worked best for you.

Good question Bill. I have never tried anything so I have no input and I also wondered if there was any significant changes to be had from different collector configurations.

I am mulling this idea over in my head right now. I have been making 'improvements' to my car for about 3 years now. I have noticed that all my 'improvements' haven't produced lower ET's as expected all the time. The "longer collectors for more bottom end torque" is one I wanted to try, but ran out of track time this Fall. I put long collectors on mine awhile back,,,cut to proper length with paint stripe on side,etc/etc. BUT, I wanted to take them back off for some comparison test passes. In reviewing my time slips, I see that I had better 60' without the collectors. I was taking for granted, that the collectors helped the torque,, but something else was affecting my 60'. New tires, new shocks, some plenum size/squirter changes, etc and still not what I wanted in 60'. I will start FRESH in the Spring. I will go back to what I originally started with, then start making 'improvements' and keep some better notes as to what is helpng and what did not help. I guess what I'm trying to say Bill, is that all I ever heard is that the collectors will help, but this probably depends on each person's combination. Good Luck to you.

I tried extensions years ago and noticed no difference in ET. Now you see the class racers running some kind of collector that is flared at the end, might be worth something or it might be the gimmick of the month.

I've seen .18 ET improvement on a NHRA Hemi stocker by adding 18 inch collectors on both the automatic car and the stick shift car back in the mid 1970s I later tried adding both primary pipe extensions(6 and 4 inch extension) and 18 inch collectors extension , the car picked up similar ET and MPH by adding one of them, but not both The new collector thingy the NHRA Pro Stockers, NHRA stockers and SS racers as well as Comp racers are using is merged collectors, noisy rascals huh

I know there are several styles like 4 into 1, merge, and the ones that are 4 into 2 into 1 etc just wondering about the goods, bads and old wifes tales, or just stick with what came on the headers.

Just some info to think about

I run mufflers 99% of the time with an X-pipe
here's what I see;
my car picks up less than .03 ET open headers probably more from the 40+lbs of the exhaust than the "free flowing" exhaust.
Open headers I lose .01-.02 in 60ft and pick up 2mph at finish
imo an x-pipe adds torque, look at the nascar cars,
I would love to run my car with just an x-pipe and no mufflers to see the ET difference.

Leigh picked up 8 hp on his 388 small block on the dyno with 4/2/1 collectors, if I recall correctly. Merge collectors must be worth something, but the difference may need to be tuned in on a dyno to reap the benefits? Collector length is a lot less critical for a narrow power band set up, like mine. I have a very loose converter, well above peak torque. The converter is almost flashing as high as peak hp, so spreading the torque with a longer collector may even hurt my combo. Any Glide racers out there with input? I would think a glide combo would find the collector length to be more sensitive.
