You did not specify a year, however Federal pumps (as well as Saginaw pumps) were used on '68-'69 B bodies with 318, 383 and 440 engines. They were probably on other years/models also, but I am only familiar with '68/69 B bodies.

If you are using one from a 360, I would think the mounting brackets would be the problem, not the pump itself.

SB and BB pulley spacing is different... at least with Saginaw pumps. The Saginaw is considered the better pump and is readily available (JY, parts store, new aftermarket). If its not a 100 point resto I'd consider getting a Saginaw pump and matching brackets. Bouchillon can probably fix you up with the brackets. They also offer a pulley spacer kit to provide correct alignment when a SB pump is used on a BB. Its for Saginaw pumps... it may work for Federal.

Changing around power steering pumps can be a big pain. All the brackets are different from slant 6 to sb to big block and all the pulley's are different as well. It's never a simple swap.

I have one on my '67 300 that looks to be OE AFAIK.

I need to fix it, too, as the pump body to reservoir seal is leaking

The U-code '73 Polara 440 CHP cruiser has a Federal pump.

Steve

Someday I'll have another C-body.

Overall, the Saginaw is a better pump, plus, it is much easier to reduce the line pressure for improved "road feel" - see:
MA - Pump It Down article

Brackets, pulleys, and hoses are no problem, widely available.

that is simply an O ring gasket, take it off the car and change the O ring.

Thanks, I have done a rebuild in the past on a ps pump, so I know what it requires, but I no longer have the tools that I used to have, and the apt. complex I live in takes a dim view of doing repairs in the car port, not that I haven't had or done some repairs in said carport

And I think I was incorrect in my 1st post, I think I have the TRW unit, not the Federal unit

It's easy to tell a Federal pump from the other one at least on 60's stuff. The Federal will have a block of wood jammed behind it to keep the belt tight. The bracket was so prone to breaking that the wood block should have had a Mopar part # on it.

FYI, here's a picture I took of my power steering pump and brackets from my '68 Charger R/T with a 440. John

Thanks for that image, John.

I double checked the back of the pump reservoir and made sure that it had that long indentation, which it does, so Thompson/TRW unit it is and NOT a Federal unit.

That is correct. They are often mistaken as being one in the same but in fact are different when it comes to the mounting bracket areas. They are interchangeable but a different reservoir can...
