Been playin' around with a syringe and a piece of plexyglass and checked a set of late 70's 596's and got "60cc's". Threw some 318 593's on the bench and got "69cc's".

I'm thinkin' the 360 heads were milled? Or does that sound normal.

I'll check some 308's and "X" heads tomorow.

Those 360 were cut quite a bit. I have CC'd quite a few and the run of the mill OEM head no matter what pre-mag casting was 70-72 CC range.. Almost sounds like you have the readings mixed up.

chrysler factory milling machines made straight marks on the surface finish & most all machine shop milling machines make curved marks so a visual may tell you something (but obviously not how much was taken off). As suggested try again & 60 is closed chambered territory. Holler how it goes

Ok, I checked the 596 casting again and it's still 60cc's.

The quench pad is definitely not as deep as the other smallblock heads I have. The 593's were taken off an original motor from my 80 Cordoba.

Checked an "X" head and a "308" this morning too. Don't know the real history on the "X" since it came on a rebuilt motor. But the "308" was from a city municipal van that I got the whole motor from and tore into.

593 = 69cc
596 = 60cc
X = 66cc
308 = 68cc

I'm interested to get the milled 596'ers on my budget 318 to mock-up an intake fitting. May have those gone through after a bit of bowl/port work.

What this does tell me..........

is to check out what I have before spending too much time on a set of heads that I thought had more compression for a 318. I prep'd those 593/318 casting and the 308's are the same or slightly better compression with a whole lot better porting.

The 308's would be the best iron open chambered SB heads all else being equal as in what needs to be done to them compared to the others

Most likely they were milled about .030. I have a set of 915 "j" that have been milled .040 and have new valves without the concaved area at the bottom and they are at 59cc.

Maybe even close to .050 if they are 1.88 stock valves
