98 grand cherokee,4.0 6 cyl,42re trans,as the weather gets colder it dont want to shift from 1st to second without flaring the engine speed a little,2nd to 3rd is really bad, once it warms up its fine,it has about 160,000 on it,fluid and filter changed 1 yr ago at 150,000,no problems in warm weather, are the seals old and dried up,or is something else going on? thanks in advance

we in the business call it morning sickness, what happens is as the rubber seals get old they begin to get hard and do not seal very well allowing oil pressure to leak by especially in cold weather
now as you get some heat in them they start to soften a little and they begin to hold pressure again so it begins working better until you allow it to sit and cool back down.

There are no rubber seals involved in the 1-2 upshift.

The point is, a lazy 1-2 shift with recently adjusted bands means there is no easy fix ala "Miracle-in-a-Bottle".
