my wife's 67 gtx's fuel gauge ain't working. my mech. traces it to the instrument panel... changes it out , still not working... takes the float out of the tank... keep in mind its 2...max 3 yrs old... and here is what he found... maybe the gas has something to do with it too.. but I prefer the blame the Chinese...

That tells me you are storing the car with less than a full tank of fuel allowing condensation to get inside the tank causing rust.

Plus I bet the tank was rusty before the new sending unit was installed.

What's it say when you ohm the sending unit?

Ron, I'm with you on blaming chinese production , but the bigger question is what does the inside of the tank look like ?

Is it rust of a surface deposit that is caused by the crap fuel ?

IIRC there's only 2 suppliers, Spectra and Quantra, so it's either US or Canadian made....but I think your problem is climate/storage/and leaving a close to empty tank stagnant, fuels ability to condense water vapor today is worse than years past,...if your fuel sender looks like that, I can only imagine the condition of the tank's upper/ceiling surface...probally looks the same?

Did it have ethanal gas in it? That and temp changes like everybody said together can do it. But on the other hand, I think Kung Fu parts has a part to play in it also.

Isn't Quanta just a dealer for Spectra? Anybody know?

Quanta's claims about 3-year warranty, Ni-Terne steel, and low scratch assembly line are exactly the same as what used to be on Spectra's old web site...

And no factory at their address if you look at Google Map.

the gas gauge was not working, my mech traced it to the gauge... he changed it, but still was not working (dont know the ohms).. he took out the float and therein was the problem..

the car is garage stored, and the tank is usually 1/2 or so full... my mech checked the inside of the tank, and its clean...

the gas is whatever crap is sold at stations in new york, which def contains ethanol.. we don't buy off-brand gas... exxon-shell-hess/etc... tho not sure if name brands are any better then off-brands..

i will now keep the tanks full, but the only other option is to get gas without ethanol, and there is not a one near to us on long island...

Are there any Co-Op stores around there? Most of them have gas without ethanol. Another thing, go to the local airport and buy Avgas and put in it, that stuff will stay good for a couple of years.

Not in the COMMIE state of new york , or pretty much the northeast wit the cali emissions standards . Nice thought but this is an unrealistic approach for most.

So did changing the sending unit or pick up screen fix the problem?

The 40 year old sending units I have taken out don't look pretty either. But they still work.

Or run a gas stabilizer or gas stabilizer with ethanol conditioner in it.

Here's a 'cocktail' we use here for 'storage'...

A good spike of 'real' fuel-110 Cam 2 or some such...

Sta-Bil-for the ethanol in the *%)$ pump 'fuel'...(I like the marine-grade)...

Some fuel-line anti-freeze...For potential condensation...

A little shot of Marvel Mystery...

We've taken samples in the spring after winter storage...

It's worked well...

Nawww, can't hardly blame the chinese for that one. Corn alcohol SHOULD be for bad colds, snakebites, and sipping after a hard day. Non ethanol gas or spiking our tanks with the above mentinoned products is probably the answer. Probably need to start doing it on all our gasoline burning engines.

But why can you pull an OEM one out after 40+ years of NOT having the tank full the majority of that time and it doesn't look like that or even close and that include OEM units with 10+ years of a half or less tank full of current E10+ fuels.....I'm sure that the Chinesse corroision plating is TOP QUALITY

upstate ny it is available... but 2 1/2-3hrs drive for me... I think I gotta go with the cam2 , which I already use on a 25% scale (25% cam,75% prem unleaded), stabilizer and some gasoline anti-freeze...
