Could be that the air-recirc door is stuck in the recirculating position.....I.E., the system is not taking in fresh outside air in defrost mode. The air door is keeping the cabin air recirculating, which will fog up the windows. Had this happen lots with the '91-93 NewYorkers and Dynasty vehicles.Had to change a mode motor or a door if IRC. Outside air is a must for proper defogging in damp weather.

I have no signs of a heater core leaking... That was my first thought. As for it recirulating inside air wouldn't it fog all the time instead of just when it is damp outside?? Thanks for the replies!!

does it use a separate a/c compressor on /off switch? if you can run it in a/c mode with the temp on hot , does it still fog up?

Make sure the drain for heater box is open also.Rain and water collecting from the evaporator in the box will also make what you are describing happen. Most dont know that when the defrosters are on the AC is running unless its below 32 degrees.Rocky

That is the best position I have found. The only place you can see out is where there is a vent blowing directly on the window... Other than that it foggy or frosted if it's really cold out... Funny thing is it can sit at work all day after that at be fine on the way home if the day clears up....
if you do not remove moisture from the air, recirculating it against a cold windshield will cause condensation to form. if the defrost switch fails to turn on the compressor ,it will not dry the air. that is why I suggested the manual mode ..whatever is wrong,it has something to do with the systems ability to dry the air. if you re-circulate outside air that has 90% humidity and warm it and apply it to a cold wind shield this is what you will get.

I do know that the compressor works. I can hear it run. The a/c works great in the summer. I always run it in manual mode I never have tried it in auto mode... Guess I still like the old days when you controlled everything by a lever and a cable....
