Hi, I have a question on '78 factory mirrors. What type of mirrors are the ones shown in the pic below?
My '78 D100 has mounting holes for that pattern but a previous owner installed the tall towing mirrors. Are the mirrors in the pic easy to source or available new?

Thanks in advance!

There's NOS one available pretty often on ebay but there pricey. There was a nice used set on there last time I looked for around $150 or so. Dodgeconnection.com use to carry them not sure if he still has any now as I haven't checked lately. Be careful as late 70 dodge vans used similar ones but the bases are flat instead of slightly curved where they attach to the door.

Be sure to get the backing plate too. I picked up a set from a wrecking yard for $40 about a year ago.

Thanks for the replies...It looks like I have the backing plates, previous owner put screws back in two of the mounting holes, looks like there is a plate behind there.

Yikes..$490 for NOS...not available at this time

These ones are not the greatest but would probably clean up a little with some steel wool.

The problem with buying those smaller mirrors now is that they are often tied to LRE's to raise the price.

Kinda like how any mechanical part is suddenly worth a small fortune when its tied into a hemi e-body.....

As an aside, over 20 yrs ago I put a set of those mirrors on a '76 Club Cab I had. The backing plates were MIA. I used carriage bolts with big fender washers. The outside looked a little 'trick' with the smooth heads of the bolts, and the fender washers provided plenty of support.

Their was a set on E bay a few days ago (see below) that got up to $305.00. But the reserve was not met and they did not sell.

I got the set that went for $152.00 a few days ago. Hoping they're as good as the pics look. We'll see when they get here!

There was a set on there a while back where the seller claimed that that style mirror only came on Warlocks & LRE's

He wanted $300 for the pair

I have 3 pairs & my worst pair were way better looking than his pair

On the hunt for some of these mirror heads myself. The search results always gets clogged up with the dorman replacement glass intended to attach to an existing head.

The major malfunction with that and these mirrors is that the head tends to rust away where the ball joint is mounted. The (2) more expensive links above look pretty clean in this area, the $100 one, not so much.

Those are really the base, no option spec'd mirror ... Now commonly called the "lil red mirror" sort of like "hemi anything" it effectively doubles or triples the price.

Seems like most of the trucks I have seen around here have the low mount ones like you (and me) have.

Wish my original owner had been a cheapskate ...

It takes gasoline to interest me.

I wouldn't mind if the previous owner had mounted the factory low mount towing mirrors. The ones on mine appear to be aftermarket and have differnt mounting holes than the factory low mounts. I have a nice set of those but I don't want to add any more holes to the door.
