Installed the battery for the first time in 11 years. Yay!

So... few questions because I have some gremlins to work out. I have been going around all the points testing ground resistance, voltage drop at various locations, etc. and everything looks good. Tapped the key and the engine cranked. So the relays, etc. are working.

Now, the lights have me a little confused. Mainly because I cannot remember how they are supposed to work. I did away with the fender mount signals that are aimed at the driver. Still have the fender marker lights though.

I have a non-stock headlight switch which I installed for the new dash. I was very careful when doing so and I am pretty confident that I tied it in properly. It was pretty straightforward.

If I pull the switch for park lamps, the two round center lamps in the grille light up. If I pull the switch for headlights, the inside park lamps turn off. The rear lamps function okay, but when I press the brake pedal the rear brake lights come on (as expected) but so do the front inner lamps in the grille (the turn signal filament), as well as the interior turn signal indicators.

Seems like something to do with the turn signal flasher possibly? I have not tried the turn signals because I don't have the stem in the column right now.

I don't have the FSM in front of me. I need to look at the schematics. It has been a few years since I did this stuff.

Sure is cool to see things all lit up. Gauges look good, headlight dimmer works for gauge lights. High beam switch works.

Sounds like a ground problem to me.
Temporarily connect a wire from the headlamp ground at the bulb and connect it to the negative terminal on the battery. If it solves your problem then find and correct your original ground problem. It may be a parking lamp ground circuit too. Check both.

Well I do know that in 68 only the front marker lights in the grill turn off when the headlights come on. The turn signal/marker lights in the grill do have separate ground wires that are screwed into the core support. No idea why they come on when your brake light do!

Front clearance lights in grill are not supposed to turn off when the headlamps are on. That is also a ground fault problem.

The grille parking lights are working like they're supposed to. I would check the hazard lights switch, make sure it's turned off. That might make all lights come on when you hit brake pedal.

Okay. So, the grille lamps are only lit if the headlight switch is in the "parking light" position, or if signaling, correct? That helps a lot. I could not remember if they were on with the headlights or not.

I have the grill marker lights grounded. Yes, they have a separate ground wire for each side. Also, the headlight ground is on the core support as well.

I'll check the hazard switch. Good thought.

as said make sure the hazard flasher switch is off. put the TS stalk in neutral. www.mymopar.com will have the wiring diagrams/colors for you. You mightt pull the dangling ts/brake harness under the steering colume & check it for continuities. With the stalk in neutral on the col half of the connector there should be continuity between the white "power in" wire coming downstream from the brake pedal switch and the 2 wires out to the dr/pass rear brake lights. Put the stalk up & down & check continuities on each. That'd be a start. EDIT Not sure on this but iirc safety regs in 69 & later required the front park lights to stay on for addit'l safety whereas in 68 down they went off when the headlights came on

My Dart's front marker lights go out when I turn the headlights on. They also blink when I put the turnsignal or hazard switch on. I thought something was wrong also, but my inspection mechanic said that was normal for cars of that age and older to have the parking lights turn off when the headlights get turned on. Remember this was 1968 and older......

It was the hazard switch. Thanks for reminding me. I have it mounted under the dash now, and probably would have been chasing my tail for a while. Flasher works with the key on, as expected. Front fender markers are working in fiberglass fenders. I needed to solder a ground wire to them and have them grounded at the core support with the other grounds.

I'm glad I kept the marker lights in the quarters and fenders. I almost went the "smooth" route. But they just look so cool.

I did a quick walk around. Quality is poor with my old tech cell phone but you get the idea.

Thanks!

That's a good lookin' dart, and the 68 little side marker lights are the coolest.

Thanks for the compliments.

Fronts are 225/45/17, rears are 315/35s/17s. I think I could have went 335s, but was chicken. Wheels are AR Torq Thrust IIs. The rears are custom, 11" wide, 5.5" offset. I cannot remember the fronts off the top of my head. I wanna say 7" wide and 5.75" offset? They were a shelf wheel. I am running AlterKtion. Tires are all Nittos. Rears are the drag radials.

If you had the emergency blinker switch on and the lights weren't flashing you need a new flasher for them. Car uses two flashers one for turn and one for emergencies. You know the turn signal flasher is good.

stumpy, I didn't get a chance to pull the hazard relay, but I had the same thought and will check it.
