Earlier this year I picked up a 66 Charger with a 71 383 motor in it. Motor runs great but I'm in the process of changing out the freeze plugs. While I was under there I snapped a picture of the vin number. Any one know what it came from?

1971 "C" = Jefferson Ave. Detroit, MI (Chryslers & Imperials ONLY)

..... and 383s were ONLY available in Newport Custom, Newport, and Town & Country.

2bbl or 4bbl? What's on the pad under the distributor?

G = 1971
383 = 383 cu.in.
5 17 = Monday, May 17, 1971 assembly date
E = cast crank

One of the late '71 cast crank 383s - is it still "cast crank"?

Does anyone know if the "cast crank" 383s were factory built 2bb & 4bbl?

Did Chrysler Corp. have "blue" 383 4bbls for the c-bodies or were all the '71 383 4bbl engines "orange"??

71 cast crank 383 was light duty 2-bbl auto trans only and is the only CC 383 made.

The C-body 383 4-bbl motors were blue as far as I know,.

Not sure if the crank is original. I will check the damper in the morning to see if it is in fact for a cast crank.
