Getting ready to take my '68 RR on it's first long distance trip (~300mi) and curious what some recommended preparations are.

I've already done all the "basic" preparations like change the oil, check the plugs, etc etc. What else?

I read a link somewhere with recommended tools & parts that should be in these cars at all times but I can't remember where I read it.

The car runs fine now, and she's been on trips of up to an hour but this is whole different beast and I just want to make sure I'm ready.

Thanks!

I'm a little OVER cautious whenever I take my RR on a haul. I always have the basic tools and:

extra belts (1 or 2,however many you run)
extra coil
extra fluids (ATF, Steering, Brake, Oil)
extra Ballast Resistor

These are all things you can replace on the side of the road to make it to the next service station.

Good luck and just keep an eye on your gauges.

Agreed. And, AAA+. 300 should be no problem for that car if in decent shape. Check the usual and go enjoy. That's what I do. I hesitate to start a list. Water, qt oil, fire extinguisher etc...

Cell phone to call AAA plus, and some water to drink if you are thirsty.

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

Add a tool kit, good spare tire, working jack and you should be good to go. Completed a thousand mile road trip with my 440 69 Charger this summer and it never missed a beat.Averaged 13.3 MPG.I was pleased. These cars were and are reliable when well maintained. Enjoy!

Is this an original style car? I mean is it built using factory parts or are there a lot of after market parts?
I have driven from California to Toronto(thats in Canada) via the back roads many times in 40 year old Mopars bone stock with no probs.
You have to use common sense before leaving, check all there is to be checked. Belts, hoses, suspension, tires, etc...
Look for anything that is worn or not right, it only takes a little while to do it most of my under carriage inspections I do while getting a real oil, lube and filter done.
300 miles... Man I'd do that in a heart beat (not chevy)
What makes you think that your car is going to come apart in 5 hrs of driving.
I was out in the North Arizona desert in an original 68 Dart and had not seen another car for two hrs on some rd right out of some movie, and thought "man I am alive"
Nothing like knowing how alone you are in a 40 year old car doing 75mph with the outside temp at 110 deg.

This is mostly an original car and I have no reason to think it won't make it.......just nervous about the first long trip and the unknown it brings.

Everyone's had great suggestions. I appreciate it.
