Well now that I'm back in the states and am saving back up for a purchase I'm committed to . I'm trying to get info on the 8.25 rear. I have a 93 Dakota sport with the 8.25 with a 3.55 sure grip. The diff is the same width as my 74 duster that has a 7.25. I want to swap them out but the Dakota has a 6 bolt pattern. do all the 8.25 use the same axle? can I swap out an older set to get 5 lug? or could I get them redrilled? thanks

Be carefull, you might not have a real 8.25 rear in that Dakota Sport. The newer rears resemble the 8.25,s but are actually 7.25,s

Either that or the newer 8.25,s are built like the older 7.25,s

I had what I thought was a newer 8.25 in a 90 Dakota Sport, but when I removed the back cover it was as chincy as the old 7.25 were.

I dont recall if I confirmed the cover bolt count, as the 7.25,s have 9 and the 8.25,s had 10.

I had just assumed it was the 8.25 by its looks and bigger mass compared to the old 7.25 rears. I was just checking this rear for its gear ratio as it was a parts donor truck, and I was considering keeping the rear. After inspection, off to the scrap it went.

later 7.25 rears have a 10 bolt cover too.

Just observe the shape of the cover, see tech archives.

Thanks for that info. Im sure I would of counted the bolts back then when I checked it out. I was sure I had a 8.25 until I opened it up, that explains it. Thanks.

To the OP, like I stated you might not have the 8.25

Had an 87 Diplomat with a 7 1/4, everyone said "10 bolt = 8 1/4" But the housing cover was not 8 1/4. Turned out at some point Chrysler added one more bolt to the 7 1/4 cover (dunno why).
